Translated Sound of The Winds, Sonus Ventorum begins with a dramatic opening for full band. This gives way to an exciting Allegro with trombones and saxophones playing the ostinato. The secondary theme is fragmented and foreshadowed prior to the second announcement of the first theme. The piece ends with both themes being played together. Great teaching elements in Sonus Ventorum include the 7/8 measure, and several rhythmic challenges as well. One of Smith’s signature works.

A slow, solemn chorale opens in b-flat minor, which contains all of the material for the piece. The second statement with a countermelody played by first trumpet and trombone. A flute cadenza brings the opening to a close, and an Allegro is followed with fragments from the opening theme. The slow chorale is brought back one last time; the tune is then played Allegro Vivo, with the original countermelody played by Smith’s own instrument – the French horn. A piece easily playable for concert and contest.

Reflections is a musical portrayal of the people and moments in our lives which shape and change us. Musical elements from various sources are woven into a rich tapestry of sounds and colors that show the full expressive range of the band. Perfect for contest and festivals! Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from Dance Prelude (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, Go Mules. This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. Dr. Russell Coleman has been the conductor for the Warrensburg Community Band since 1985.

A dramatic opening marked Moderato Maestoso announces the thematic material for Concert Dance and Intermezzo. The dramatic opening quickly ends and an Allegro begins with solo Latin percussion instruments. The Allegro winds its way through the material, and then it transitions to Andante Rubato; where a solo trumpet plays the secondary theme. Once the slower section has played out, the Allegro tempo returns with a solo by piccolo backed by the previous Latin percussion instruments. Several key changes and volume variances provide a transition to the original theme. Smith combines several of these themes and fragments together for an exciting conclusion.

Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known spiritual songs known to date. Claude T. Smith cleverly created this band setting forming variations throughout. With Smith’s passing in December of 1987, this was one of the final works he produced.
