Psalm 150 calls out to sing the praise of God on various instruments. Many composers have set this text to music, including Cesar Franck. Nevertheless, Franck, who worked as an organist in Paris for many years and wrote many orchestral works and oratorios, left only a few works on Biblical texts in a large setting. Franck wrote his setting of Psalm 150 in 1883 for the inauguration of the organ in a home for the blind in Paris. The basically simple, homophonic choral writing was conceived with the young students in mind. Franck regularly articulated the texture of the full orchestra with percussion and harp entries evocative of tone-painting. It is a short, effective work that has been making a strong impact at many choral concerts ever since its publication by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1896.

The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy. Jorgen Jersild's music is always marked by a timbral refinement with a certain inspiration from Cesar Franck and a persistently seamless musical timing. His early works sit in the intersection between the Danish and French traditions, whose inspirations he later synthesized into his own personal style, as can be heard in Three Romantic Songs for Chorus , composed in 1971. Jorgen Jersild (1913-2004) was a Danish composer and pedagogue. He studied in Paris and at the University of Copenhagen, before becoming a teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for over thirty years. During this time he wrote several successful textbooks on solfege and musical theory.

It received ist first performance there, under the composer's direction, on the 2nd April 1861.
