Four Motets and a Chorale are choral interpolations drawn from Randall Giles' Latin setting of St. John's Passion. Movements I, II and V have organ accompaniment, primarily derived from the choral parts. Perhaps the best-known of these texts is Crux fidelis--Faithful Cross--which is set as a traditional four-part chorale. In the other four movements, Dr. Giles blends chromatic voice leading and varied meters (often within wide tessituras) to augment the naturally expressive sense of the texts.

Easily the most difficult music of this lot is Randall Giles's stunning Four Motets and a Chorale. Quia id quod accidit and Vinea mea electa are unaccompanied pieces of uncompromising dissonance and difficulty; Attolite portas and Christus factus est are accompanied works with triadic harmony. In the former, the energy of the counterpoint gives off a glistening intensity, whereas in the latter unrelated major and minor chords are juxtaposed like primary colors to create sensuous vibrancy of a Gustav Klimt canvas. The original accompaniment of these movements is for organ and brass sextet, which may be rented from Paraclete Press. Scored for chorus, children's choir, organ and chamber orchestra, St. Luke Passion adopts a pared-back focus on choral voices over its 75-minute span. Seeking a more spiritual, inward approach to match Luke's text, the composer eschews settings of interpolated texts as arias and the customary Evangelist and Christ soli: everything is sung by choral forces. A children's choir grants a measure of innocence to Christ as the sacrificial lamb, emphasising aspects of otherness, sanctity and mystery.

The Passion narrative is framed by a Prelude exploring the Annunciation and a Postlude taking us beyond the Crucifixion to the Resurrection and Ascension. These incorporate Gospel texts where Luke explains the Kingdom of God.

Along with this childishness Hans Christian Andersen's poetry encompasses enormous - almost Willim Blake-ish - cosmic visions, in theinterpolations between e.g. reaching the Heaven as opposed to you'll find it in a Rosebud, or the juxtaposition of Everyday Life and Eternal Poetry - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words, which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace - if you will. Per Norgard.

This concertato on a new hymn with text and tune by Michael Costello is scored for SATB and organ with optional congregation, oboe, trumpet, and strings and was written for the Sacred Music Program of Lenoir-Rhyne University. Three stanzas, with full introduction and interlude before the final stanza (unison with descant). During stanza two (which is for SATB choir without congregation), the tune LAUDA ANIMA is interpolated (instrumentally) between the hymn phrases.

A hushed, intense interplay among the voices, wind chimes and piano provide the framework for this superb original for developing choirs. Set in an intriguing minor mode, this work is full of interesting harmonies, delightful imagery and word-painting, and enhanced by an interesting accompaniment-all of which bring this marvelous poem to life. This setting of a William Blake text is in two distinct vocal parts and has a pastoral flavour with flowing and singable melodies. The clever interplay between the two parts makes this an enjoyable song to sing and listen to, making an excellent and rarely-heard concert filler and a valuable addition to a choir's repertoire.
