RECUERDOS DE ESPANA Memories of Spain for solo piano by Marc Douyon was inspired by the very diverse music of Spain. This colorful and engaging work uses a triplet rhythm that prevails throughout much of the composition. The music starts with an ambiguity of keys between major and minor, and subsequently travels to different keys. The first two sections are military-like, and feature the melody mostly in the left hand. The middle section is relatively calm with melodic fragments played over an ostinato-like figure in a sequential fashion. The fourth section features idiomatic Spanish rhythms reminiscent of the Andalusian region of Spain. Here, melodic fragments are played over a relentless bass accompaniment.

A delightful combination of lyrical themes with rhythmic exuberance and folk-like melodies. Viva Espania is based on themes by two 19th-century Spanish composers. The opening theme is from Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega. That piece is a traditional Spanish waltz and was inspired by the famous Alhambra Castle in Grenada. The second theme is by Isaac Albeniz from a suite of music for the piano, Songs of Spain, entitled Leyenda. This section, while still in 3/4 has a fiery exuberance much like one would expect from a flamenco guitarist, yet it's very playable by young players. Authentic Spanish music that's a terrific addition to any concert performance!

Not a great deal is known about the life of the artist and poet Adriaen Valerius (ca. 1575 - 1625). He is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute (or cittern) called the Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck (literally Netherlands sound memories). The book is a collection of his poems, set to already-existing popular melodies, and is significant in that it is one of the earliest published sources of the Wilhelmus, the Dutch National Anthem. The book gained national popularity during the long war with Spain, a popularity that was revived for similar reasons during German occupation in World War II.
