Justin Heinrich Knecht's compositional interpretation of Moses Mendelssohn's poetic translation of the 6th psalm bears the force of Enlightenment ideas in its music. Effective instrumentation, the targeted use of the choir and vocal soloists together with contrasting dynamics communicate the entire emotional spectrum of this psalm text. Knecht created an early Romantic piece of south German church music which has unjustly lain in obscurity for too long. As in his other psalm compositions, the scoring can be regarded as flexible, allowing parts to be omitted or unavailable instruments to be substituted by similar sounding ones according to the forces available. Score available separately - see item CA.3750100.

Another addition to a series of publications dedicated to the Psalms, this lofty anthem is replete with sensational melodic material and sweeping crescendos. Using music as a spiritual and poetic focus, the song delivers a portrait of the divine with regal results. The piano is substantial and captures the orchestration with colorful figurations and engaging patterns. A soaring final stanza passionately expresses the epic truth of God's love with joyful abandon. The anthem ends quietly with the thought, Christ is the theme that stirs my heart to sing. The Psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his working life, and, aside from a cappella settings, he left behind five great orchestral Psalms. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4007500.

The present setting of Psalm 150 from 1884 is one of Cesar Franck's late works. It shows the highly individual elements of the composer's style in concentrated form: a consciously symphonic idiom, bold and unmistakable harmonies, largely characterized by their chromaticism and unusual concepts of form. The popularity of this work has largely been hindered by the need for large instrumental resources for so short a piece. The present arrangement of the Psalm for choir, strings and organ (ad libitum: harp and percussion) is intended as a compromise that retains much of the original sonority, but keeping the work within the scope and possibilities of churches desirous of performing works with instrumental accompaniment within the context of liturgy.
