Johann Sebastian Bach knew the value of good compositions by other composers, as is evidenced by contemporary accounts and by looking through the remains of his music library. However, in certain instances when copying works which he prepared for his own use he could seldom refrain from making corrections. In both of the following movements of the Missa Sancti Lambertie by Johann Christoph Pez Bach made only a few changes. With regard to his motive for copying out these rather simple movements, this may been due primarily to his inquisitiveness. In spite of their simplicity the vocal and instrumental parts are treated with ingenuity and the volume of sound is surprising, given the modest scoring. Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. In the south German-Austrian region the Pastoral Mass of Johann Baptist Schiedermayr was regarded as one of the most well-known and beloved works in this genre. Engaging melodies, passages in thirds and sixths, and typical pastoral motives, such as horn calls and open fifths, the latter a reminder of the bourdon of bagpipes or a hurdy-gurdy, characterize the movements of the Mass. Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. Handel's Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278 enthralled London audiences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so today in concert halls and churches all over the world. It was performed for the first time in a festive service on 13 July 1713 in St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the Peace marking the end of the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession in 1713. The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Bach's first cantata for the election of the Leipzig town council, composed in August 1723, is one of his most splendidly scored work from his Leipzig period. The choice of opening, with the representative form of a French overture, was suited to a festive orchestral scoring. Two choral movements frame a middle section which consists of two arias and a recitativo accompagnato with a trumpet ritornello. The conclusion of this extended festive music takes a reflective turn in movements 8 and 9, when Bach allows a recitative to be followed by simple, prayer-like chorale movement. The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces.
