Um die Jahreswende 1872/73 machte sich Peter I. Tschaikowsky an die Komposition eines Zyklus von '6 Romanzen' fur Gesang und Klavier opus 16, startete dabei mit dem einem Wiegenlied nach einem Text aus den 'Modernen griechischen Liedern' von Apollon Nikolajewitsch Maikow. Uber die Entstehung des ouvres ist nichts uberliefert; der russische Musiker war nach Moskau ubersiedelt, unterrichtete am Konservatorium, hatte aber als Komponist noch keinen durchschlagenden Erfolg. Mit der Gattung des Liedes beschaftigte er sich Zeit seines Lebens, wagte sich bereits nach 1856, in seiner Studienzeit, an erste Lieder und Romanzen und legte in seinem Todesjahr 1893 einen letzten Zyklus vor. Das hier vorgelegte 'Wiegenlied' eroffnet den fruhen Romanzen-Zyklus opus 6. Tschaikowsky widmete es Nadeshda Nikolajewna Rimskaja-Korsakowa, der Frau des Komponistenkollegen. Es ist ein zugleich schlichter wie ausdrucksstarker Gesang in balladenhaftem Erzahlton.
