Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.
De bewerking van het bekende koraal Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr van Jacob de Haan begint met een citaat uit zijn eigen Missa Katharina, een mis voor koor, sopraan en blaasorkest. Daarin maakte de componist de melodiebij de Latijnse tekst uit het laatste deel van Gloria. Na een tussenspel klinkt er een koraal dat net zoals bij het Latijnse deel door het koor kan worden meegezongen. U ontvangt zowel een Duitse als een Engelse tekst.
Jacob de Haans Bearbeitung des bekannten Chorals Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr beginnt mit einem Zitat aus der Missa Katharina von Jacob de Haan, einer Messe für Chor, Sopran und Blasorchester. Darin setzte der Komponist die Melodie zum lateinischen Text aus dem letzten Teil des Gloria. Nach einem Zwischenspiel erklingt der Choral, der genau wie der lateinische Teil nach Belieben vom Chor mitgesungen werden kann.

L’arrangement réalisé par Jacob de Haan, s’ouvre sur un extrait du Gloria de la Missa Katharina (Messe pour choeur, soprano solo et orchestre d’harmonie composée par Jacob de Haan). This Urtext edition takes into account all the sources including the old and the new complete editions whose relationship is clearly explained in a stemma. In several passages the renowned Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper has arrived at variant readings, such as in the â??Sanctusâ?, where the choir enters instead of the soloists, rather than coming in at â??Pleni sunt coeliâ?. No less worthy of mention is the addition of the soloists to the choir in most of the â??Credoâ?. With the publication of his hypnotic Pater noster, Carus proudly presents Jacek Sykulski as a new composer in the Carus Contemporary series. Whilst Sykulski has achieved worldwide success as Director of the Academic Choir at the University of Poznan and the Poznan Boys' Choir, as a composer he has remained a well-guarded secret until now. In his sacred compositions he combines in music the deeply Catholic-imbued tradition of his country with his own compositional technique, characterized by a tremendous vocal sensuousness of sound and a conscious use of tonality enriched by dissonance. His Pater noster was composed in 2009 and revised in 2015 for a performance by the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin. The first section of this three-part work for eight-part choir (tenors and sopranos also split into three) begins with the invocation Pater noster homophonically in A minor. This then introduces the Gregorian liturgical melody of the Our Father canonically and aleatorically, like a contemplative congregational hymn. The middle section calls out Dein Reich komme in increasingly insistent rhythmic declamation, more demanding, with hypnotic repetitions and intensifications. In the last section, Sykulski returns to the opening harmonies, but now a semitone lower on A flat, followed by an intensification at the words sed libera nos a malo - and delivery us from evil once more; this ends unresolved in a diatonic cluster on A flat as the paradigm of our imperfect earthly existence. The eight-minute unaccompanied composition is extremely singable, impressive, and not difficult to master. Starting rather mysteriously at the outset, oboe and handbells are effectively brought into the fabric of the piece. This work carefully submits to the antiphon/psalm verse/antiphon Introit form and is thus entirely liturgical by intent. At the return of the antiphon, the score becomes much more expansive, and only the outline of the chant is suggested. The oboe wisely doubles the first soprano part, as it ascends to two high B-flats. In my mind's ear, I hear a very capable choir singing this piece, preparatory to the opening hymn/carol. While it captures the very quiet side of the mystery of Verbum caro factus est, it nicely prepares us for the joys of festive clangor that are sure to follow.
