This march was written at the instigation of Gennady Rozhdestvensky as an encore for a concert in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on 15 April 1982, at which Edison Denisov's “Peintureâ€, Sofia Gubaidulina's “Offertorium†and Alfred Schnittke's “GogolSuite†were performed. It was used by Schnittke as an introduction and finale of his ballet “Sketches†in 1985.

Alfred Schnittke completed his orchestral work SCHERZO in 1957, but it was never performed during the composer's lifetime (24.11.1934-03.08.1998). The world premiere was given on 24.01.2016 in Warsaw (Lutoslawski-Studio) with the Polska Orkiestra Radiowa under Michal Klauza.
