The pieces collected in LA FLAUTA ROMANTICA were written by three of the greatest Spanish instrumental virtuosi of their time: the pianists Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados as well as the violinist Pablo de Sarasate. When transcribing their piecesthe aim was to both create convincing chamber music works for flute and to preserve the typical Spanish sound idiom of this music. The CD provides demo tracks as well as the accompaniments of each piece.

Elles comptent au total vingt et une pièces dont dix-huit ont été rééditées en 1845 sous le titre « Brises d'Orient » et trois autres sous le titre « Les Minarets ».A leur sortie, ces mélodies n'obtiennent pas un grand succès. Deux raisons peuvent l'expliquer. D'une part, un incendie détruit une partie des stocks de partitions imprimées. D'autre part, le public, qui avait aimé les « Orientales » du poète Victor Hugo et les « Pestiférés de Jaffa » du peintre Eugène Delacroix, ne semblait pas être attiré par l'orientalisme musical.Les brises d'Orient possèdent la puissance des charmes orientaux plutôt doux. Le compositeur traduit à merveille l'atmosphère orientale en marquant les rythmes par des basses étonnantes.Plus que des formes traditionnelles, ce qu'il faut retenir de ces pièces est le fait qu'elles racontent de belles histoires avec toujours une dynamique très réussie de passages lents et de passages vifs et rapides.L'écriture de Félicien David ne manque pas de couleurs. Cependant il n'essaie pas d'appliquer l'exotisme du Moyen-Orient. Les mélodies chantent naturellement à travers ses pièces.En écoutant « à une Smyrniote » comme dans les autres pièces se révèle un orientalisme assez peu oriental pour nous aujourd'hui. A l'origine, l'orientalisme est un mouvement artistique, ce qui signifie qu'il ne peut être fidèlement lié à la reproduction de la réalité.Dans cette pièce, la mélodie est liée sans nul doute à la basse harmonique très mise en valeur par des accentuations rythmiques qui constituent une assise solide. Des reprises de passages musicaux dans l'enchaînement de l'œuvre révèlent des atmosphères complètement différentes, suggérant au pianiste un nouveau fil conducteur dans l'interprétation.

Composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest, Oriental fantasies is a piece by Max d'Ollone for Bb Clarinet and Piano accompaniment. Really melodious, this piece is quite complex to play. This work starts slowly, with some accelerations, followed by a more quiet and melancholic part. The end is more lyrical and features some trills and numerous accidentals. Max d'Ollone (1875-1959) is a French musician who won the first Grand Prix de Rome in 1897. He was a great professor and composer, who produced numerous pieces including ballets, symphonies and chamber music..
