Originally, the present work - with a Latin text and the title Non nobis, Domine - was a gift written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in November 1830 for the 25th birthday of his sister Fanny. Five years later he decided to have it printed, and his publisher Simrock urged him to produce a German translation as well. It is in this form that the setting of Psalm 115 has become known alongside four other Psalms of Mendelssohn's in a compositional scope ranging from church to concert hall. The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, the autograph and the first edition. The new edition, based on autographic and printed sources, meets all the requirements of an authoritative performance material.

The composer Péter Andorka (born 1987) studied under Miklós Kocsár and Miklós Csemiczky at the Bartók Secondary School of Music and under János Vajda at the Liszt Academy of Music, both in Budapest. Apart from solo, chamber and orchestral works, several vocal compositions of his (oratorios and choral works) have been performed, and he has also composed for the stage. The Three Liturgical Chants to Latin texts were composed for six-part female choir in 2009. The text of the first piece (Lux aeterna) comes from the mass for the dead, that of the second (Laudate Dominum) from Psalm 116 (117 in many English translations), and that of the third (Adoro te devote) from a hymn by StThomas Aquinas, whose Gregorian chant is also incorporated into the work. The euphony and elaborate part-writing of the Three Liturgical Chants place a serious task before choirs, particularly in terms of intonation. Especially the wide compass of Lux aeterna requires a professional choir. The pieces in the cycle can be purchased separately (Z. 14941, 14942 and 14943).

Max Reger’s setting of Psalm 100 is one of the “grand style†choral-symphonic works of the classical modern repertoire. Contrapuntal skill in the tradition of Bach combines with overwhelmingly powerful expressiveness, rich in contrasts. The full harmonic and stylistic breadth of the early 20th century sings out, not only in frenetic song, but also in the search for awareness in quieter passages. Reger’s opulence, tonal and contrapuntal almost throughout, finally culminates in a double fugue with an off-stage orchestra similar to the trumpets of Jericho over “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gottâ€. The composer’s declared aim was: “The psalm must go so brilliantly, that all will be simply ’bowled over‘.â€.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was so frequently self-critical, apparently held his setting of the 42nd Psalm in very high esteem, as can be inferred from a letter of 5 August 1837 to Breitkopf & Hartel. The composers wish was fulfilled: after a fundamental expansion of the work and the first performance of this final version on 8 February 1838 at Leipzigs Gewandhaus, the 42nd Psalm was first printed that same year by Breitkopf & Hartel.
