Here is another one of Johnny Richards' great latin tunes as written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This lilting 5/4 chart has a great groove and amazing ensemble writing, with solo space for alto, trumpet, and trombone. This new arrangement makes the piece much easier to play and can be played with traditional instrumentation. Quintile is a part of the Adventures in Time CD.

Bill Holman's Great Big Band was a sensational ensemble! That album has just been re-issued on Mosaic Records. This chart is an example of Bill's talent for investing old material with brilliant new ideas. It originally featured Bill Perkins on tenor sax and Conte Candoli on trumpet solos. An exciting, amazingly fresh, inventive chart. Recorded on the Bill Holman's Great Big Band CD. 5-4-4-3.

Curnow has adapted the amazing vocal arrangements of David Maddux for the jazz ensemble. This arrangement moves through many variations of this most lovely of melodies. The music is somewhat legit in concept, not difficult to play, and it has a very hip, sophisticated, lush harmonic sound. Ideal for a different slant to your Christmas programming! 5-4-4-3.

This theme and variation is based upon the well-known hymn Amazing Grace. The first variation states the melody playfully in the piccolo and trumpet parts. The second variant is more angular and powerful and takes the theme through more dissonant harmonic configurations. In the third variant the theme is stated in the low reeds and is surrounded by a potpourri of trills, glissandos and other dissonant effects. The last section combines variations and builds to a dramatic finale.

“Oh, freedom!†Mark Hayes’s inspired medley of spirituals is a remarkable tribute to courage in the face of adversity, the triumph of the human spirit, and the amazing grace that guides and sustains each of us through hardship. Opening with a slow, prayer-like setting of “Oh, Freedom,†this medley gradually builds in intensity through a thoughtful series of spirituals, including “Guide My Feet,†“I Want Jesus to Walk with Me,†and “Jesus Is a Rock in a Weary Land,†closing exuberantly with tenor solo and choir singing “Free at Last.†Great for school concerts, it’s also a terrific choice for worship throughout the year, especially Christ the King, Eastertide, Lent and Reformation. Don’t miss Mark’s outstanding optional orchestration!
