John McCabe's Pueblo for solo Double Bass. Duration: approx. 7 minutes.
Pueblo is an off-shoot of a series of compositions inspired by desert country, and it was commissioned by Leon Bosch with the aid of funds provided by North West Arts. The piece is continous, falling into several sections, and is largeley based on the high circling motif heard at the start and referred to again in the harmonics at the close. It is prefaced by the following quotation from Scenes in American Deserta by Reyner Banham, published by Thames and Hudson:
'Clouds, high and flat, were now building up in thesky, the wind was settling to silent calm, the weather was very cold, and the stream through the center of the pueblo was almost frozen across, the Indians chipping out ice to melt down for water.'
The aim in writing the piece was to express in musical terms a response to the vivid picture of a scene relating to life in the American desert conveyed by Reyner Banham's text. Although not numbered among other Desert works, this belongs to this family of compositions, along with another Banham setting, written for the King's Singers, Scenes In America Deserta. - John McCabe

Chant des Voyelles - Incantation of Vowels (2018) for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) was premiered by Volti on May 4, 2018 at Noe Vallay Ministry in San Francisco and on May 6, 2018 at BAMPFA, in Berkeley, California.Martinaitytė encountered at the Rockefeller estate Kykuit near New York City a work by the cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz called Chant des Voyelles . It was titled after an Egyptian prayer composed only of vowels that was designed to subdue the forces of nature. Further research showed that many ancient traditions (Egyptians, Greeks and Tibetans) ascribed sacred, mystical and healing powers and significance to vowels. The details might vary in different traditions, yet it is clear that something miraculous happens through the very act of prolonged repetition of certain vowels - whether in the form of a mantra or prayer or as a self-healing ritual. This work experiments with subtly shifting, sometimes barely audible clouds of overtones resulting from the sustaining of certain vowels in multiple voices in a magical way.Duration: 16-17'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

Explore the terrain and weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest, beginning with a cold, fog-covered morning, concealing the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. As the sun continues to rise, the fog fades and a gloomy rainstorm takes its place while we traverse through the evergreens. As the music persists onwards, rays of sunshine break through the clouds and bring about a warm, joyous afternoon filled with light, breathtaking mountain views, and the scent of pine needles.

Score and separate parts with spiral-bound keyboard/organ part. Number 5, 1950 was Mark Rothko's last painting before the breakthrough into his mature format. In it the luminous color fields of a classic Rothko are inscribed across the middle with three delicate lines. Describing this painting and its pivotal position in Rothko's work, Brian O'Doherty observes: 'After this, the lines disappear completely.' In recent years gesture and figuration have disappeared from my music. What used to be background has emerged to become a musical world composed entirely of floating color fields. In this new world I've changed media, moving from the orchestra to smaller combinations of acoustical instruments and electronically-processed sounds. I still think in orchestral terms, but this hybrid medium allows me to create orchestral textures for more practical and readily available ensembles. Initially I imagined this as a kind of monolithic music -an entire piece as one rich and complex sound. Then I came to hear it as homophonic or heterophonic. And now - in this musical world that I thought was completely free of lines - I've come to hear a polyphony of harmonic clouds. Maybe the lines never disappear completely. Maybe Christian Wolff was right when he quipped: 'No matter what we do, sooner or later it all sounds melodic.' - John Luther Adams.

Commissioned by the Mavron Quartet for its tenth anniversary, with funds from the PRS for Music foundation's Women Make Music award, Rhian Samuel's Threaded Light presents a novel take on the string-quartet genre. Two of its movements include a percussive element played by members of the ensemble, with an optional percussion part for a fifth player. In addition, the unusual seven-movement structure arises from two elements: the idea of a thread, continuous, stretched or broken; and, contrasting with this notion, the influence of pictorial imagery in the slow, evocative second and sixth movements ('Late Sun' and 'Estuary by Moonlight') inspired by the impression of light passing through clouds near the composer's home on the hills above Aberdyfi in mid-Wales. Deriving from shared material, three abstract, prelude-like movements entitled 'Twine' (Nos. 1, 4 and 7) act as the 'thread' that binds the work into a whole, placing the cloudscapes and the similarly luminous percussion-based inventions, No. 3, 'Glinting Stars' and No. 5, 'Foxtrot Gleam', within the framework of an overall and satisfying symmetry.

The summer season in the southern United States rumbles with quick, intense storms most afternoons. Flashes of lightning, clapping thunder, and drenching rainfall are characteristics of the massive, anvil-shaped thunderhead clouds that roll in during the heat of the day. Scored for flexible instrumentation, Storm Chaser is inspired by the intensity of these storms and the adrenaline that flows through the veins of those that experience the wrath of Mother Nature. Hop on the plane, it's time to fly! This short suite of descriptive pieces takes the ensemble on a brief ride through the sky. Hear the sounds of the engine starting, the take off, the beauty and solace of the clouds from above, the nervousness of the descent, and the excitement and joy of arriving at our destination.Lift Off! is a short suite of descriptive pieces, all inspired by a short flight from Manchester, England to Brussels. In the first movement we hear the engine start, and after the plane has moved into position, it takes off. The second movement depicts the beautiful view of the clouds from above. It all seems timeless and you don't even feel as if you are moving. The last movement starts nervously (I'm not a great flier!), as the plane begins its descent from the sky. However, as we land safely back on earth, the piece ends in a flurry of excitement and triumph, returning to a theme heard in the first movement.

Depicting the awe-inspiring moments after a thunderstorm, this concert overture is an exciting and dramatic work that portrays streaks of sunlight jetting toward the horizon. A lyrical opening sets the tone as the clouds begin to break, and then the music takes off in a frenzy of excitement as the sunlight breaks through. Incredible harmonies intertwine with dynamic fanfares and woodwind flourishes as the work continues to develop. A lyrical section provides a brief respite to the active rhythmic pulse before the music takes off again, building to one last heroic statement of the main theme. Inspirational!

Inspiring Nature These three piano pieces, composed for the ,,Concours, Brin d'Herbe 2019, may be performed separately or as a collection, in which case they should be played in the given order. Though each piece is aimed at a different technical level (I. Elementary, II. Advanced, III. Intermediate), they have a common artistic aim: to connect musical expression with poetic inspiration. In particular, these pieces meditate on the emotional connection between our interior life and the vast and varied landscapes of the natural world all around us. While composing I found myself re-reading Kathleen Raine (one of my favourite poets) and was struck by her statement (in the foreword to her ,,Selected Poems): ,,'Nature-poetry' is not what we write about nature, but rather the language of images in which nature daily speaks to us of the timeless, age-old mystery in which we participate. Nature communicates today what it told the earliest of humankind, and what it will tell future generations when our modern high-rise cities are no more. Meanings, moods, the whole scale of our inner experience, finds in nature the 'correspondences' through which we may know our boundless selves. Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all. What she says about nature resonates with my understanding of music, which also sometimes affords us an opportunity to know 'our boundless selves'. And I am especially interested in the way that sounds - which, as vibrations in the air, are another aspect of nature - can reveal and heighten our sense of connectedness to ourselves and our surroundings. Each movement is inspired by a single stanza from the poem ,,Amo Ergo Sum by Kathleen Raine, and I would encourage anyone playing these pieces to devote time to internalising the words as well as the music, for they may contain the key to an accurate expression. As such, the relevant words are quoted at the start of each score. ,,Inner Landscapes is dedicated to Joe Browning, Lexy Oliver and Omar Shahryar.
