Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. The Symphony no. 83 is the only Paris Symphony in a minor key. Its nickname “La Poule†(“The henâ€) was not coinedby Haydn. But it's almost impossible not to be reminded of the bird when listening to the oboe's “cluckings†in the second theme of the first movement. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finestscholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future.

Every purpose under the heaven, arranged for an accompanied mixed voices choir with soprano and tenor solos, is a musical tribute to one of the most important cultural landmarks of Western civilization - the 1611 King James Bible. Written in celebration of the Bible's 400-year anniversary, Goodall has brought together ten of the most expressive passages, from Genesis to Revelation, to create an oratorio that is at once steeped in historic grandeur and utterly relevant in today's society. Musically, it displays all the hallmarks of Goodall's well-loved style - soaring melodies, rhythmic vitality and perfectly crafted lines. However, this work offers singers and audiences something more: an opportunity to introduce new generations to the expressive power and ancient truths of this historic text.Commissioned as a gift to the United Learning Trust, Every purpose under the heaven is suitable for young singers, choral societies and church choirs of all abilities. With the final verse of the Book of Daniel from the Old Testament and a related cantata text, Telemann mourns the death of a prominent, but until now unknown dignitary in a cantata marked by great intimacy and with exquisite instrumentation. Jakob Ditmar, the Kantor of the Nikolaikirche in Berlin, to whom we owe the survival of this work, contributed two beautiful chorale settings for a performance in 1757. First critical edition of this cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3913900.

Often sung congregationally to BERKSHIRE, CHURCH TRIUMPHANT, DEVONSHIRE or DUNELM, Charles Wesley's much-loved Christmas hymn receives a new setting from Nigel Ogden. His skills as an outstanding performer, best known perhaps as host of the evergreen Radio 2 series The Organist Entertains, guarantee both a light touch and a serious musical content. Eminently practical, To us a Child of Royal Birth may be performed by single voices or SATB choir without divisions. The music artfully distributes the four verses between full chorus, upper voices, lower voices, and then tutti again. Ogden's winning command of a popular musical idiom is everywhere in evidence, in the beautifully resolved seventh and ninth chords, and in the assured movement of the anthem from its opening key of E flat to its conclusion in a bright and warm resolution of C major.

Ercole Pasquini (1550 ca-ante 1620), working for many years in Ferrara, then Frescobaldi’s predecessor as organist of the Cappella Giulia, leaves a considerable corpus of keyboard music that identify him as a link between Frescobaldi and Naples. It is half a century since the first critical edition of Ercole Pasquinis keyboard music was published (CEKM, vol. 12). This new edition (in two volumes) appears in the light of subsequent scholarship. It offers new solutions for some troublesome passages. It includes a number of pieces that were not included in the previous edition, but which do seem to have been attributed to Pasquini, as well as unattributed pieces which maywell have been by him. It also takes account of a source (ms. Naples 48, dated ca.1600) which has come to light in the intervening years. This manuscript includes a copy of a Canzona by Pasquini that is older and generally superior to the other surviving copies of this piece. The preface contains detailed discussion of the composers biography, the provenance of the sources, and the performance implications of the notation. Both preface and commentary are in English and Italian.

The cantata Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God) BWV 192 is based on the text of the well-known hymn. It is therefore one of a small number of chorale cantatas which contain no free poetic texts. Correspondingly, there are no recitatives either. It has only recently been assumed that this three-movement work was not intended for Leipzig, but was actually written in 1730 for Bach's prestigious position as Kapellmeister of Saxe-Weissenfels. The court of Duke Christian enjoyed the its sojourn in the newly-renovated castle of its secondary residence in Sangerhausen and, at Trinity, in the court church, celebrated the anniversary of its consecration with festive music. Bach evidently occasionally contributed to this. The work does not survive complete. Even in the 18th century a full score evidently no longer existed, just a set of parts, the tenor part of which is entirely missing. For the new edition the missing part has been reconstructed by Detlev Schulten (Leipzig). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3119200.
