These days, many concert bands celebrate their centenary--this provided a good reason to compose the Centennial Celebration. This work has a festive, harmonious and optimistic vibe. A joyful introduction is followed by a lyrical passage with an enticing melody, after which the same theme can be heard in a pop style variation. Next is a kind of trio with a melody that will linger in your mind. Lively sounds bring us back to the lyrical main theme once more, but this time exuberant, like a pop ballad. Finally, we hear the festive sounds of the introduction again, now as a lustrous conclusion.

With a single movement, it is a great and joyful variation on a main theme, framed by two softer moments, always from the theme of the beginning. Particular attention is paid to the dialogue between the two pianists. The work concludes in a great and luminous momentum.

This joyful and jubilant piece by Richard Meyer has the sound of a celebration and a title that describes how music unites us all: Yumiweeus. Hand drumming and a simple chant-like melody start the festivities, followed by an original theme and a set of six variations. Duets featuring the first stand players of every section introduce the first five variations, and a virtuosic final variation closes the piece. The changing meters and variety of key signatures and modes included here are sure to challenge all of your more advanced players. The measure of contrary motion that starts the piece is heard again between each variation and is meant to represent a coming together to common ground.

The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn. Fast-moving triplets start to appear and the music reaches a joyful and ecstatic conclusion. Olli Mustonen.

Scripture: Psalm 27, Psalm 47, Psalm 63, Psalm 66, Psalm 91, Psalm 104, Psalm 116, Psalm 146.
Ed Eicker’s second offering to this series consists of eight pieces for solo piano. Psalm 27’s joyful theme is varied by several key changes. Psalm 47 is an exuberant, rhythmic prelude reminiscent of Copeland’s “Hoedownâ€. Psalm 63 is a passacaglia-a theme and variations over an ostinato bass. Psalm 66 is in 8/8 meter, but has accents on beats 1, 4, and 7, giving the accompaniment a playful feel. Psalm 91 begins with an expressive minor theme, which briefly changes to major before returning to a pleading tone. Psalm 104’s sparse melody is heightened with tempo changes and fermatas. Psalm 116’s theme is expressive and pleading. Psalm 146 is set in a swinging gospel style.   .
