Carus-Verlag is now publishing this early work by Camille Saint-Saens in a critical new edition. Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. Camille Saint-Saens was a devoted follower of historicism as part of the reform movement in French church music. This is more evident in the mass published here than anywhere else. The model for this work is the unison Messe Royale by Henry DuMont (1610-1683). Saint-Saens combined its Gregorian style in a convincing manner with contemporary elements of Romantic composition, an expressive chromaticism, which determines the harmonic progression. Alongside the orchestral forces, the Grand Orgue plays an important role. Used as a solo instrument, it is an equal partner in the composition. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2706000.

Practical performing Urtext edition based on the latest state of Bach research. Every era hears and interprets Bach anew, and every era also evaluates the sources afresh and with new eyes. 40 years after the publication of the St. Matthew Passion in the New Bach Edition, Klaus Hofmann, Director of the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute Gottingen for many years and a contributing editor to the New Bach Edition, presents a new edition. Hofmann has placed the study of the sources at the service of musical practice and the detailed investigation of Bach's intentions. Bach scholars are well aware that Bach's original score and performance parts, running to almost 500 pages of music, are full of ambiguities and contradictions, particularly regarding articulation, which constantly challenge performers to new interpretations. Hofmann discusses these and other problems in a concise critical report, frequently arriving at new conclusions in the process. Extensive notes about parallel passages offer valuable help for interpretation. Special attention was devoted to the performance material with regard to practical needs. Thus, for example the text incipits are also printed in the instrumental parts (including tacet passages). In short - an Urtext edition for practical performance based on the latest findings in Bach research. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124400.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3101800.

More than usual, in this chorale cantata the hymn is continuously present; it appears as the cantus firmus in four of the six movements and gives the work an overall unity. In addition to the opening chorus and in the closing chorale, it appears in a trio, a rare occurrence in Bach's vocal works, and even in a recitative. The latter is performed by recorders. The rich scoring for winds - besides the recorders it also includes three oboes - characterizes this cantata, which is performed after Christmas and whose text refers back to Christmas and also points to the new year. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3112200.

After the really well-known cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80, Bach's only other cantata for Reformation Day is Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild BWV 79. The central chorale movement Nun danket alle Gott has become extremely famous separately from the cantata. This movement is characterised by the catchy melody of the two horn parts with their interludes between the lines of the chorale. These in turn are taken from the freely-composed opening chorus, thus forming a surprising link between the movement for chorus and the chorale. The chorus and both the arias in the cantata were used later in a Latin parody in the so-called Lutheran Masses. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3107900.

He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5016400.

With a text based on Confessions of St. Augustine, this song of comfort extols the surety of God’s love for us. Appropriate for times of reflection or meditation, this moving work sings of the peace found when we allow our restless hearts to find a home in God. While effective with piano and choir alone, the addition of string quartet, flute, and horn in F adds depth and enhances the legato line of the melody. For cantor or soloist. Instrument parts are optional.

The cantata Ihr werdet weinen und heulen [You will weep and wail] BWV 103 for Jubilate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. A large-scale choral movement on Jesus's words quoted from the Sunday gospel reading opens the cantata; the choir is interrupted by a bass arioso - the vox Christi. Both arias are introduced by a recitative with arioso conclusion; in each, exquisite solo instruments are deployed: flauto piccolo in the contralto aria and trumpet in the tenor aria. Score available separately - see item CA.3110300.
