Barcarole for flutes is a flute feature for three solo flutes. (If desired, the solo can be played by six flutes.) both the first and the last section are in unison for the solo flutes while the middle section is divisi. The piece should be performed with the band accompaniment clearly in the background. If needed, the conductor should reduce the number of players to achieve proper balance.

The piece begins with a smoothly flowing melody in the oboe and fist clarinet, accompanied by a countermelody in the alto saxophones, then flows into a lyrical melody for the solo flutes. The low woodwinds and low brass punctuate the sensitive and delicate melody with a rhythmical accompaniment. The ensemble builds in a sweeping sound toward the end of the first section. The middle section contains rhythmical variety within the flute solo as well as in an agitated accompaniment before returning to the original melody. After the return of the original melody, the brass and low woodwind accompaniment builds to a point before falling back to finish with the gentle hush of the flute solo.

Breeze in the Forest was commissioned for the concert to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Haruyuki Nakatsukasa of Osaka Kyoiku University. “Kanreki” is a special term used to celebrate reaching the age of 60 in Japan. The composer was inspired by some of Professor Nakatsukasa’s admirable characteristics upon composing this work: he speaks softly and at the same level as his students; he is fashionable, stylish and refined. The band accompaniment is at a moderate level of difficulty, allowing the solo flautist to choose this work for many an occasion.

Dit werk werd geschreven ter gelegenheid van het ‘Kanreki-concert’ voor de zestigste verjaardag van professor Haruyuki Nakatsukasa van de Osaka Kyoiku University. Kanreki is een speciale term die in Japan wordt gebruikt wanneer iemand de leeftijd van zestig heeft bereikt. De componist haalde zijn inspiratie uit een aantal mooie eigenschappen van Nakatsukasa: hij spreekt zacht en weet zijn studenten in hun eigen taal te benaderen; hij is eigentijds, stijlvol en verfijnd. De harmonieorkestbegeleiding is van een gemiddelde moeilijkheidsgraad, zodat de solofluitist dit werk voor diverse gelegenheden op het programma kan zetten.

Kanreki“ ist ein spezieller Begriff, mit dem in Japan das Erreichen des 60. Lebensjahres gefeiert wird. Der Komponist ließ sich bei der Komposition dieses Werks von einigen der bewundernswerten Eigenschaften von Prof. Nakatsukasa inspirieren: Er spricht leise und auf Augenhöhe mit seinen Schülern; er ist modisch, stilvoll und gebildet. Die Orchesterbegleitung hat einen mittelschweren Schwierigkeitsgrad, sodass Soloflötisten dieses Werk bei vielen Gelegenheiten aufführen können.

Au Japon, le terme « kanreki » qualifie le 60e anniversaire d’une personne. In 1906 Bohemian violinist and composer Frantisek Drdla (1868-1944) composed the delightfully charming piece entitled Souvenir. This piece for violin and piano is one of the most popular compositions by Drdla. Wil van der Beek has produced this arrangement for Flute and Concert Band which remains faithful to the original version. The texture of the work allows the soloist to show off both their technical and musical talents and its charm makes it an ideal encore item at any concert.

De Boheemse violist en componist Franz Alois Drdla (1868-1944) heeft geen omvangrijke oeuvre achtergelaten, maar schreef wel twee operettes en twee bekende werken voor viool en piano: Vision en het innemende Souvenir-dit in 1906 gecomponeerde werk word door violisten geregeld als toegift gespeeld. In Wil van der Beeks arrangement van Souvenir voor fluit en harmonieorkest komt de originele compositie uitstekend tot haar recht. De solistkan zich over het gehele bereik van het instrument- ziwel in muzikaal als in technisch opzicht - naar hartelust uitleven.

Wil van der Beeks Bearbeitung von Souvenir für Flöte und Blasorchester wird der Originalkomposition des böhmischen Geigers und Komponisten Franz Drdla vollkommen gerecht. Sowohl in musikalischer als auch in technischer Hinsicht kann der Solist - über den gesamten Umfang seines Instruments- sein ganzes Herzblut in die Musik einfließen lassen.
