George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score available separately - see item CA.5505600.

The St. John Passion, Bach's first passion oratorio, can hardly be understood asonework. Between 1724 and 1750 the work was performed at least four times in various Leipzig churches under the composer's direction and for every one of these occasions it was revised - sometimes quite substantially.This edition presents the St. John Passion in its second version of 1725, of which only excerpts were rendered in the New Bach Edition volume II/4 (1973). This version as well as the last one of 1749 constitute the two versions that have come down to us almost in their entirety.Most recently found sources - in particular the libretto print of the passion rediscovered in 2015 - are taken into consideration in this edition for the first time.

In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach's direction in 1749. In the musical-historical context Anton Diabelli is among a transitional group of Biedermeier composers who cannot be classed as either classical or romantic. Diabelli's intention was to publish this Mass in accordance with the tradition of his teacher Michael Haydn as a Country Mass, although its technical demands and also its length far exceeded those customary in a Country Mass and Missa brevis. The extant sources offer scope for performance in various different versions as regards the instrumentation used, all these versions having the right to be considered authentic. Bach's cantata BWV 151, whose wonderfully heartfelt opening aria has been rightly numbered among Bach's most inspired ideas (Alfred Durr), was composed for the 3rd day of Christmas 1725. Flute and oboe d'amore lend pastoral coloring to the chamber music sound picture. The oboe d'amore was not originally included in Bach's score; after completing the score he added the part to the orchestra for the first performance. In a later performance about 1728-1731 Bach replaced the flute by a solo violin, adding various performing instructions and ornaments, of which a flautist can make use in his originally rather modest part.
