Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas Keyboard accompaniment and guitar chords are printed in the edition.

Dorian Dialogue is a concert piece for band set in the Dorian mode. Evoking traditional English folk melodies, the first theme is rustic in nature and performed with gusto, while the contrasting second theme flows in a singing style. This piece would be a perfect selection to highlight an ensemble's talent in festival performance and help teach simple sixteenth note figures.

The melody of The Friendly Beasts (“Orientis Partibusâ€) originated in twelfth-century France and has been attributed to Pierre de Corbeil, Bishop of Sens. The song migrated to England by the thirteenth century, where its popularity grew and in the early twentieth century the familiar English words were added. The melody has been set in both quadruple and triple meter and is presented in both meters here. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) included the carol in his English Hymnal (1906).The words in both the original Latin and modern English versions pay homage to the place of animals in the Christmas story. The carol has also been known as The Donkey Carol and The Animal Carol. This setting is intended to reflect the Medieval origins of the melody. Some freedom of tempo would be appropriate during the “chant†version of the melody (mm. 6–18). Adding poco ritardando at m. 28, at the discretion of the director, should lead to a stricter tempo in mm. 31–53, in the manner of a medieval round dance. A gentle approach to the performance is appropriate. Finger cymbals could be added to or replace all or part of the triangle part, again at the director’s discretion.

After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at the end of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata texts by the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this work to the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria Auf,auf, mit hellem Schall with solo trumpet is note-worthy since in place of a middle section in the aria, here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative. The cantata Die Himmel erzahlen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling of God in glory) BWV 76 by Johann Sebastian Bach was written for the 2nd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 6 June 1723 in the year it was first performed. This ambitious two-part work was the second cantata which Bach wrote after taking up the position of Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig. Bach's aim was evidently to demonstrate a particularly wide range of musical forms in both the arias and the recitatives in this cantata. The opening chorus is based on verses 2 and 4 of Psalm 19, with verse 4 structured as a choral fugue. Both parts of the cantata end with a chorale movement with different verses from the Lutheran hymn Es woll uns Gott genadig sein. The text refers loosely to the epistle reading from the 1st letter of St John, but deals more with general thoughts about the temptations of the Christian which can be overcome through love. Bach also performed the first part of the cantata later with minor revisions, but evidently no alterations to the text, on Reformation Day in Leipzig. A winning and moderately easy concert piece that takes its name from one of the moons of Jupiter, Callisto is a vibrantly scored set of two variations on a fragment of a theme from the Jupiter movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. The characteristic flatted-7th of much English folk music is retained in both the quick opening section and the slow, reflective variation that forms the B section of this clever and appealing overture-style piece.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance. The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God†seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece.
