In autumn 1895, after returning from New York once and for all, Dvorák took up his former position as teacher at the Prague Conservatory. This clearly had an inspiring impact on him because in the space of just four weeks he composed a new string quartet in G major. Together with the Quartet in A-flat major op. 105, it forms a glorious close to his chamber music oeuvre. Echoes of Bohemian folk music are here mixed with cantabile themes, while his motivic working shows him to be a master at the height of his powers. Even today, it seems almost as if we can feel the composer's satisfaction with this work: “I am working so easily and it is going so smoothly that I could not wish it better.”.

Irish composer Kevin Volans' work has gained international acclaim over the years. Drawing on a combination of European and African compositional techniques, his music displays a unique charm. Volans' distinctive sound is heavily in demand, and since the mid-1980s his work has been performed regularly at such venues as the Pompidou Centre, the Royal Albert Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York. This work for string quartet was commissioned by the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, and was first performed on the 16th December 1990 at the Almeida Theatre, London, by the Smith Quartet. Score. Imagining life in the ancient English lands of Mercia (600-900 AD), Martin wrote 12 scenes of what he believed life was like in the kingdom. Martin's twelve quintets were completed in the Spring of 2016 and have already been performed in their entirety. The numbering reflects the composer's suggested performance sequence, but individual quintets may, of course, be performed separately.

This volume brings together Mozart's youthful attempts at this later so central genre of the string quartet: the astonishing “Lodi Quartet” K. 80 by the only fourteen-year-old composer, the three “Quartet-Divertimenti” K. 136-138 which are also readily played by chamber orchestras, and Mozart's first true string-quartet cycle K. 155-160 which was composed during his third (north-)Italian journey in 1772/73. Mozart's cleanly written scores of all the compositions have been preserved so that the edition stands on a secure foundation. In his informative commentary, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the experienced Mozart editor at G. Henle Publishers, devotes a separate, comprehensive explanatory section to the well-known articulation problem “dot or wedge.” The Armida Quartet provided artistic input for this edition.

In the 1950s, he broke away from his bourgeois social background of his family and started an artist’s life in Paris, where he initially wrote chansons and earned a living by performing in small cabarets and bars. Over the following years he achieved worldwide fame with his chansons, which were alternately harsh and melancholic Roland Kernen has selected a number of the wonderful chansons written by this most creative artist to produce this unforgettable chanson medley.

Composed at various times of the composer's life, Lirica Catalana op. 14 [Catalan Lyric] is an anthology of Catalan texts from various authors and reviews of popular songs. This is the same process Comellas followed in Lirica Castellana and Lirica Inglesa. The songs of these groups do not have a musical connection, but more a linguistic connection. The melodic flow in the different groups, shows how the text and the language used, produced a concrete response Comellas' harmonic vocabulary.

The highlight of this group is the Cant de la Sibil·la [Song of the Sybil·la], a liturgical drama and Gregorian chant, whose lyrics recounts a prophecy of the Apocalypse and was originally interpreted in Latin. From the thirteenth century there are versions in Catalan. These earlier versions Judici Signum weren't direct translations from Latin, but came from previous adaptations Old Provencal and Old Catalan, which gives us the idea of the enormous popularity of this song must have had in the past. The text by Comellas used is one of the most popular in Catalonia.
