The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

Heinrich Schutz's setting of Psalm 133 was composed for the wedding of his amiable and much-loved brother Georg Schutz which took place on 9 August 1619 in St Nicholas's Church in Leipzig. With its colorful instrumental accompaniment, this intimate composition may be regarded as one of the most charming works of its time. At the same time it is probably the first work by Schutz which gives us a sense of the concertante style of the Symphoniae sacrae I which were to follow. Venezian version The Laudate pueri was composed between 1735 and 1749 for the Ospedale degl'Incurabili in Venice. Since the Ospedale was an institution for the musical training of gifted girls and young women, the vocal parts are scored for female voices. As Director of Music at the Saxon-Polish Court of Dresden, Hasse was also responsible for church music, and therefore he arranged works which were originally written for the Ospedale.. Now that the Dresden version has already been published in the Hasse-Werk-Ausgabe, the original composition is printed here for the first time. Sonata Sancti Mauritii was written in 1666 by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (1633?-1693) for the feast day of the patron saint of St. Mauritius Church, Kremsier, which is now Kromeriz, Czech. The date of the composition shows it to be an early work composed about two years after he joined Prince Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn's orchestra as trumpeter, composer and copyist.The source for this edition is a manuscript in the Castle Archives, Kromeriz, C.S.S.R., call number Breitenbucher IV 9.This sonata contains many features of interest to trumpeters and is an attractive piece in its own right. Two noteworthy points are 1) the use of mutes to raise the pitch of the trumpets from C to D and 2) the unusual key of g minor for the trumpets with a difficult move from the f-sharp to f-natural in the first trumpet part in measures 112-113. In the latter case, a fermata has been inserted editorially for musical as well as practical reasons.This piano reduction was prepared from a modern edition of the work with strings and continue available also from Musica Rara. The string parts are preserved here as much as possible in the sections marked Tutti. The sections marked B. C. As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world.
