The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing. The Golden Age is een programmatische compositie in vier delen.

Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

Heinrich Schutz's setting of Psalm 133 was composed for the wedding of his amiable and much-loved brother Georg Schutz which took place on 9 August 1619 in St Nicholas's Church in Leipzig. With its colorful instrumental accompaniment, this intimate composition may be regarded as one of the most charming works of its time. At the same time it is probably the first work by Schutz which gives us a sense of the concertante style of the Symphoniae sacrae I which were to follow. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2004800.

Venezian version The Laudate pueri was composed between 1735 and 1749 for the Ospedale degl'Incurabili in Venice. Since the Ospedale was an institution for the musical training of gifted girls and young women, the vocal parts are scored for female voices. As Director of Music at the Saxon-Polish Court of Dresden, Hasse was also responsible for church music, and therefore he arranged works which were originally written for the Ospedale.. Now that the Dresden version has already been published in the Hasse-Werk-Ausgabe, the original composition is printed here for the first time. A devout Catholic and social progressive, Louise Talma was devastated by John F. Kennedy's death, and immediately began commemorating the president in her music. Her first work of commemoration was her piano concerto Dialogues, which was premiered in December 1965 by pianist Grant Johannesen and the Buffalo Orchestra led by Lukas Foss. A response to Kennedy's unfinished plans, all five of the piece's movements, Challenge, Struggle, Respite, Pursuit, and Peace, are focused on the creation and completion of patterns. --Kendra Preston Leonard, Louise Talma: A Life in Composition.

Sonata Sancti Mauritii was written in 1666 by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky (1633?-1693) for the feast day of the patron saint of St. Mauritius Church, Kremsier, which is now Kromeriz, Czech. The date of the composition shows it to be an early work composed about two years after he joined Prince Bishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn's orchestra as trumpeter, composer and copyist. The source for this edition is a manuscript in the Castle Archives, Kromeriz, C.S.S.R., call number Breitenbucher IV 9.This sonata contains many features of interest to trumpeters and is an attractive piece in its own right. Two noteworthy points are 1) the use of mutes to raise the pitch of the trumpets from C to D and 2) the unusual key of g minor for the trumpets with a difficult move from the f-sharp to f-natural in the first trumpet part in measures 112-113. In the latter case, a fermata has been inserted editorially for musical as well as practical reasons. This piano reduction was prepared from a modern edition of the work with strings and continue available also from Musica Rara. The string parts are preserved here as much as possible in the sections marked Tutti. The sections marked B. C. (Basso Continuo) appear here as realised in the orchestral edition.(from the Preface: Charles W. Smith, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, U.S.A., 9th March 1985).

Kitimbua Kivumbiis a Swahili phrase that loosely translates as 'Stomp the Dust'. This work was inspired by a trip the composer, Shawn Okpebholo, took to Kenya where he studied the music of the Akamba living in the Machakos region. It was the Second Place Winner of the 2016 American Prize in Composition (orchestral division). Okpebholo is the recipient of the 2021 Walter Hinrichsen Award which is bestowed by the American Academy of Arts and Letters annually. A performance of the work by the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra can be viewed on YouTube.

Born in Saxony and originally trained at the St. Thomas school in Leipzig, Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) celebrated great success at the Hamburg Opera on the Gansemarkt. In 1709 he was lured away to a position in Darmstadt, where he remained for the rest of his life. The sacred composition Gott will mich auch probieren (GWV 1121/14) was written during the early years of his tenure as Music Director at the Court of the Landgraves. In it he attempted to make the genre of the motet useful for church music in Darmstadt through innovative design and varied structure. The present chorale motet is a markedly charming and catchy piece of choral music (easy to mid-level difficulty) which manages totally without solo arias and recitatives and through its compact dimensions can excellently be suited for use in today's worship services. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1035300.

As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3113000.

Well-known for his magnificent instrumental works and violin sonatas, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber is unjustly less recognized as a composer of sacred music. His works for Salzburg Cathedral were mainly written after 1670. The Stabat Mater is an impressive setting for use in worship, and includes four or six verses of the hymn. The four-part composition displays great simplicity yet stunning beauty, particularly in the concise contrapuntal presentation of each individual verse.
