Six delightful miniatures from Leevi Madetoja (1887-1947), one of the most significant Finnish contemporaries of Sibelius, are now available as new guitar arrangements by Lauri Manninen. The Miniatures suite (1914) consists of five movements: The Evening Star, Valsette, Nocturne, The Game and The Children's March. The Legend from Suite Pastorale (1916) was also originally composed for piano.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. In his youth, when still searching for his own personal style, Debussy composed a series of short, stand-alone piano pieces. He took traditional genres such as the ballade, mazurka, nocturne and waltz, but in general used each of them just once, as if trying them out. One such was the “Valse romantique”, published by Choudens of Paris in 1891 and thus written at the same time as his famous piano works “Two Arabesques” and the “Suite bergamasque”. This charming waltz is of moderate difficulty and thus ideal either as a pedagogical piece or for concert performance.
