Just by reason of its scoring the Missa Sancti Hieronymi occupies a special place not only among the settings of the Mass by Haydn, but also in the repertoire of church music at the Royal Court of Salzburg. Other than the Hieronymus Mass and the Proprium motet Timete Dominum MH 256, which is connected with it, there are no additional surviving works in the Salzburg repertoire with this type of instrumentation. The unusual instrumentation, the contrapuntal style in the fugal sections, as well as the melodic invention and harmonic elaboration show that this Mass is a masterpiece. The motet Gutes und Barmherzigkeit was composed following the death of the Leipzig student Jacob Schulte in 1625, for the comfort of his most sorrowful parents, as Schutz's dedication states. The motet survived only incompletely, with soprano II, tenor II, and the vocal bass parts missing. Editor Helmut Lauterwasser has reconstructed these parts and describes his approach to this in the foreword.

This composition for soprano and chamber ensemble was inspired by the incomparably beautiful poem El viaje definitivo by the Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1956 (the German translation of the poem is included in the score). The piece can be performed by several possible ensembles: 1) soprano and 12 stringed or 12 wind instruments, 2) soprano and 8 stringed or 8 wind instruments ? playing parts I-VIII, 3) soprano and 4 stringed or 4 wind instruments ? playing parts I-IV. The work was premiered in 1982 in Budapest by the New Music Studio Ensemble, conducted by Albert Simon.
