Carus-Verlag is now publishing this early work by Camille Saint-Saens in a critical new edition. Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. Camille Saint-Saens was a devoted follower of historicism as part of the reform movement in French church music. This is more evident in the mass published here than anywhere else. The model for this work is the unison Messe Royale by Henry DuMont (1610-1683). Saint-Saens combined its Gregorian style in a convincing manner with contemporary elements of Romantic composition, an expressive chromaticism, which determines the harmonic progression. Alongside the orchestral forces, the Grand Orgue plays an important role. Used as a solo instrument, it is an equal partner in the composition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2706000.

In the musical-historical context Anton Diabelli is among a transitional group of Biedermeier composers who cannot be classed as either classical or romantic. Diabelli's intention was to publish this Mass in accordance with the tradition of his teacher Michael Haydn as a Country Mass, although its technical demands and also its length far exceeded those customary in a Country Mass and Missa brevis. The extant sources offer scope for performance in various different versions as regards the instrumentation used, all these versions having the right to be considered authentic. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2300700.

The coal seller is a song for SCTB a cappella by Paul Ladmirault. The song was written with a main theme, two variations and a coda, and features a total of 5 verses. The lyrics remind us of a time when coal sellers came to town to sell merchandise. To be sung a cappella, all in andantino, this song is very lyrical and has some polyphonic aspects and some merismas. Each verse contains different lyrics, all revolving around the coal seller and his life: - Verse 1: this verse settles the action, with the seller trying to sell coal in the city - Verse 2: the seller is asked how much is the cost of a pound of coal - Verse 3: he is asked where his wife is - Verse 4: the beauty of his wife is highlighted - Verse 5: the seller explains why his shirt is so black Paul Ladmirault (1877-1944) was a French composer. He composed numerous pieces including: operas, ballets, orchestral works, chamber music and vocal music..

Justin Heinrich Knecht's compositional interpretation of Moses Mendelssohn's poetic translation of the 6th psalm bears the force of Enlightenment ideas in its music. Effective instrumentation, the targeted use of the choir and vocal soloists together with contrasting dynamics communicate the entire emotional spectrum of this psalm text. Knecht created an early Romantic piece of south German church music which has unjustly lain in obscurity for too long. As in his other psalm compositions, the scoring can be regarded as flexible, allowing parts to be omitted or unavailable instruments to be substituted by similar sounding ones according to the forces available. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3750100.

A lush original melody highlights George Matheson's moving Romantic-era poetry. Gradually incorporating phrases of Albert Peace's 19th-century tune in verses 1-3, the 4th verse fully quotes the last stanza of the familiar hymn (ST. MARGARET). Medium difficulty; choirs will find this readily accessible.

The title Pastoral Mass originated from my children's song Shepherd Song, as this melody is played by the saxophone at the beginning of the work. The sound of this instrument is reminiscent of a traditional Lithuanian folk instrument known as a birbyne, played by shepherds in the country. The character of the music varies between popular and Romantic styles, and the text is taken from the traditional Latin mass in six movements. At certain points, the instruments are able to improvise freely - this is predetermined by the conductor and soloists. The soprano saxophone part can also be played on any other woodwind instrument with an appropriate range. (Vytautas Miskinis).
