Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Partite is a continuous--that is, connected--set of variations on the chorale melody Herzliebster Jesu, was hast do verbrochen translated in some modern hymnals Ah Holy Jesus, how has Thou offended?. The basic form of the work is rather traditional--a theme played by bass trombone preceded by an introduction and followed by a series of variations. A more fundamental aspect, however, is the shape created by a succession of moods: the introduction is questioning, or perhaps questing; the statement of the theme is quiet but troubled; the three variations following become gradually more mocking and sarcastic, but are overcome by the serene and accepting final section, which incorporates one of J.S. Bach's most moving harmonizations of the chorale. Partite was commissioned by the University of Georgia Trombone Choir, Dr. Phillip Jameson, Director. It is dedicated to the memory of Mark A. Lea. The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan's ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul' was too austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960's. This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument's vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst's other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist.The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti is part of his Credo in F. This motet of 8 voices is a wonderful example of polyphony with many suspensions thrown in for good measure. The music is sweet with a beautiful sadness, making it a work that touches most listeners in a very personal way.Mr. Brink has transposed the work down a fifth into the key of F minor (resolving to F major at the conclusion), otherwise keeping the music true to its origins. This 4 minute work has a range of up to high B-flat for the 1st part. Nabucco is the opera which established Verdi's reputation as a great composer and even he realized its importance as he noted this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. iTromboni alum Kenneth Pearce and Andrew Poirier have skillfully set the Overture to Nabucco to highlight the beautiful melodies and technical flare in their arrangement for trombone quintet (2 altos, 2 tenors, bass). Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.
