Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum) te Arnhem, als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het brassbandrepertoire.De componist schrijft:Het idee voor Evolution kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een tak binnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan de naam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om een wezenlijk onderdeel van allecomponenten binnen het Chinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementen die in ieders leven een rol spelen. Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water - Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal; metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting; water helpt bomen te groeien; hout dat brandt creëert vuur; en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf was ik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aan dit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Evolution bestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijze te laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van het voorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk, waarmee de cyclus wordt afgerond.

Evolution wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem (Holland), in Anerkennung ihrer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Brass-Band-Repertoires.Der Komponist über sein Werk:Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung der chinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. Dieses Prinzip nimmt eine zentrale Positionim gesamten chinesischen Gedankengut ein, sei es in der Wissenschaft, Medizin oder Astrologie. Einfach ausgedrückt, werden damit in allen Lebensbereichen verschiedene zyklische Beziehungen zwischen fünf Elementen hergestellt.Zum Beispiel: Erde - Metall - Wasser - Holz - Feuer - (Erde) - usw. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer) und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen: Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw. Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolle emotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Evolution aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organisch wachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Jeder Satz entwickelt sich aus den Elementen vom Ende des vorhergehenden Satzes und das Material der Eröffnung vollendet am Schluss des Werkes den Kreis.

Evolution se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que le motif premier réapparaît.

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1555-1612), perhaps best known for his many published motets and instrumental canzoni, spent the majority of his career as organist at Venice's Basilica San Marco. Sonata XVIII survives in the 1615 print Canzoni et Sonate (RISM G88), compiled and edited posthumously by a Father P. Thaddeo, Gabrieli's confessor (likely assisted by Alvise Grani, who is credited with the same for Symphoniae Sacrae II). The work is scored for 3 choirs, with rubrics indicating the use of 4 cornetti and 10 tromboni. The present edition is based on a copy of RISM G88 located in the Staatsbibliothek Augsburg. All notes and accidentals are true to the print; ficta and optional ornamentation based on the treatises of Bassano and Dalla Casa are located above the staff. Substitute parts are available in PDF form from the publisher by request.

The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Het woord tsunami is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofale gevolgen.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond ereen zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizenden mensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen ensteden.

Er zijn meer gebieden waar sprake is van een directe dreiging, zoals op het eiland La Palma, één van de Canarische eilanden. Dit eiland ligt op een breukvlak en is daarmee een tijdbom van de natuur. Bij een calamiteit als eenmegatsunami zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgen van dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami eenallesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een gewone dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in de lucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Themas worden onderbroken doorplotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na hetnatuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de natuur.

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends, myths and fairy tales.
The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the scene of action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres.
The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate, a lot of hustle and bustle appears to be going on in the courtyard. Pages, squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed, flax is being spun, cattle are being tended and some craftsmen fromneighbouring villages are busily at work.
In the upper chamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out, and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious.
There are also festivities, some of them sober, others exuberant.
The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets, the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards, at the party there is dancing to the music played by minstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

In ‘Land of Legends’ worden we door de Duitse componist Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte meegenomen in de fictieve wereld van legendes, sagen en sprookjes.
De inleiding van het eerste deel (The Castle) beschrijft de majestueuzecontouren van de plaats van handeling. De instrumentatie (hoorns) zorgt er mede voor dat we ons direct in Middeleeuwse sferen wanen.
De toevoeging van het scherp koper geeft zelfs een heldhaftige tintje.Wanneer we doorde poort naar binnen gaan blijkt dat het op binnenplaats een en al bedrijvigheid is.
De pages, schildknapen en soldaten houden zich bezig met het in tact houden van de wapenuitrusting. Er wordt bier gebrouwen, vlas gesponnen,het vee wordt verzorgd en enkele ambachtslieden uit de omliggende dorpen zijn druk in de weer.
In de bovenste kamer van de ronde toren verblijft een oude wijze man (The old Wizzard). Hij laat zich bijna nooit zien, niemandweet wat hij precies doet. Er wordt gezegd dat hij zich bezig houdt met tovenarij/magie. Het is een groot mysterie, in nevelen gehuld.
Gefeest werd er ook. De ene keer sober de andere keer uitbundig.
De bruiloft in het derdedeel heeft allure. Onder luid trompetgeschal wordt de bruid aan de hand van haar vader binnengebracht. Tijdens het feest wordt er gedanst onder begeleiding van de troubadours en natuurlijk volgt een bourgondische maaltijd.

Everybody is familiar with the zoo. Remember all those animals? Big ones, small ones. Water dwellers, air-bound birds, long legged hoppers, creeping bugs. All animals seem to have their own peculiarities.
Now, Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom.
An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo', Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals, such as the white swan or the butterfly, but there are also more exotic breeds, like the lion, the monkey, or theelephant.

The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition, Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. In this he succeeded extremely well.

De dierentuin. iedereen is er wel eens geweest! Al die verschillende dieren, groot en klein, gevaarlijk en ongevaarlijk, in het water, in de lucht of gewoon op het droge, en allemaal met hun eigen bijzonderheden.
Carl Wittrock(componist van o.a. het wereldberoemde ‘Lord Tullamore’) neemt je in ‘A View at the Zoo’ mee op een muzikale ontdekkingstocht door het dierenrijk die je absoluut niet mag missen.
In totaal komen we gedurende deze wandeling10 compleet verschillende dieren tegen. Naast de dieren die je niet zomaar op straat tegenkomt, zoals de leeuw, de aap en de olifant, is er ook aandacht voor dieren waar we misschien al iets beter bekend mee zijn, zoals de zwaanen de vlinder.

De compositie bestaat uit korte deeltjes die qua opzet doen denken aan ‘De Schilderijententoonstelling’ van Moussorgsky. De partijen zijn versierd met herkenbare illustraties van de verschillende dieren.Wittrock zoekt bij elke compositie naar iets wat zowel de musici als de luisteraars kan boeien en dat is bijzonder goed gelukt!

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean.
In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished.
After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica’s main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their ownmusical style called Reggae.
Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.

The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats.

Na enige schermutselingen viel het onder Britse heerschappij en bloeide de suikerhandel.Na afschaffing van de slavernij in 1834 kreeg het uiteindelijk pas in 1944 volledig zelfbestuur. Jamaica is lid van het Britse Gemenebest.

Jaren na de suikerexport is op dit moment de muziek misschien wel het bekendsteexportproduct.
Eerst was de Amerikaanse muziek erg populair op het eiland. Later begonnen de Jamaicaanse muzikanten zelf te experimenteren en ontstond uiteindelijk de Reggae.
Bekende reggea artiesten zijn Bob Marleyen Peter Tosh.

De belangrijkste instrumenten bij reggae zijn de bas en de drums. Samen leggen zij de basis voor de stijl neer. de riddim. Een bassdrum-accent op de tweede en de vierde tel, in plaats van de eerste enderde, zijn kenmerkend voor een typisch reggae-drumritme. Dit wordt vaak aangevuld met syncopische patronen. De slag-gitarist speelt de akkoorden in de kenmerkende reggaeslag, niet op maar tussen de tellen.

The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of ‘Like a Child’ by Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made.
After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.
Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter,support and love. (Adagio)
The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world!

Wie de jeugd heeft, heeft de toekomst. Met dit statement begint deze compositie van Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
Het begin straalt kracht en ambitie uit. Maar welke kant gaat het op, welke keuzes moeten gemaakt worden?
Na de inleidingworden de eerste schreden op het levenspad gezet, het is nog wat onzeker (de driekwarts maat voelt een beetje wankel). Toch gaan we daarna op pad, onbevangen, met open vizier de toekomst tegemoet al blijken er toch noch kwetsbaremomenten te bestaan.
Gelukkig mogen we dat soms ook zijn en dan is er altijd wel iemand bij wie we geborgenheid, steun en liefde ontvangen. (Adagio)
Het laatste deel straalt al veel meer zelfstandigheid uit. Laat maarkomen die toekomst, we kunnen de wereld aan!
