During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

Israeli pianist Tal Weissman was born in Haifa in 1972, and began his musical training at age four. While a youth, he performed as a soloist with most of the orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded an Outstanding Israeli Competitor at the Arthur Rubenstein Competition in 1992, and has won prizes in international piano competitions in Europe.

In 1995, Weissman was accepted for piano studies with the internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Maria Curcio Diamand in London. During this period of study in London, he was awarded many prizes and performed in most of the major concert venues in England. In 1999, he made a concert tour of the United States.

Tal Weissman returned to Israel in 2004, where he teaches piano privately and continues to perform both in Israel and abroad. His compositions for piano and other instruments express the human sprit as it faces the challenges of the world.

“Published in 1953, the Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra was composed by the French composer, conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). This concerto was dedicated to Ulysse Delécluse (1907-1995), a French Clarinettist known for his transcription of 'Quinze études' by J. S. Bach for the clarinet. Each of its three movements were chosen to be the examination pieces at the Paris Conservatoire, the first movement for the Examination Solo in 1953 and the second and third for the Contest Solo in 1966. This concerto begins with an unconventional start, the clarinet playing on its own and being joined later by the orchestra. It also contains some unusual material such as polychords and dissonances through the piece. Notes on this concerto by Henri Tomasi himself were written in 1957, describing the importance of the improvisation for the principal topic.”.

Patrick Hiketick is a Belgian pianist and composer. As a composer he worked for nearly all theatre companies in Flanders and he wrote over a 100 different theatre plays, amongst which the complete oeuvre of Molière and Shakespeare. He was also the musical director for all Brecht plays for KNS theatre in Antwerp, where he worked as the home composer for 10 years. He than became the musical coordinator for the Royal Ballet of Flanders and he wrote several ballet compositions for symphony orchestra. He has his own close-harmony and jazz trio, and he works freelance as a composer and as artistic director in several musical productions. He composed many clarinet works for the Flanders Clarinet Quartet, and was honoured in Japan with concerts completely dedicated to his works.

Spanish clarinettist, composer, and teacher Antonio Romero y Andia was born in 1815 in Madrid. He made his debut at 14, and later became solo clarinettist and music director of the Royal Court Orchestra. He is now remembered primarily for the Clarinet key system that bears his name, as his compositional works, though high quality, were few in number. From 1849-1876, Romero was the Clarinet Professor at the Madrid Conservatory, where he wrote his Complete Clarinet Method . Over 150 years later, it is still in popular use by schools and conservatories all over the world.
