Canadian Folk Trilogy offers a refreshing setting of three popular Canadian Folk songs. Kicking things off is an enjoyable adaptation of Donkey Riding. Singing this tune helped sailors to pass the time as they used the donkey engine to load timber onto the decks of ships in Canadian ports. Inuit Lullaby slows the pace with a simple but beautiful melody set in three bar phrases. Finally, we conclude with a rollicking version of I's the B'y (I'm the Boy), a traditional Newfoundland folk song.

To hear a recording of this piece, please visit the Hal Leonard MGB Concert Band page at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeHzOLTDBDG2pZX6fYtaxSwBased on the traditional Japanese tune â??Suiryo-Bushi,â? Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song opens with two contrasting statements of the melody - first sparsely presented by the woodwinds and then in a harmonized version played by the full band. This is followed by a lively section based on pentatonic melodies that characterize the folk tune. The following slower variation first centers around a plaintive English horn melody made up of sections of the original tune, and later presents the opening phrases of â??Suiryo-Bushiâ? against an intensely florid accompaniment. The final section is in the form of a scherzo that eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune. Duration: 8:30.

After the great success of the Greek Folk Song Suite that has lasted for over twenty years, Franco Cesarini once again ventures intothe long and rich tradition of Greek folk music. In his Greek Folk Song Suite No. 2, the three movements that form the piece are named after the three dances reworked by the composer. The first movement, Samiotissa is a kalamatianos, whose most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8-time signature. It is a festive dance, today considered the Greek national dance, which has roots dating back to antiquity. The second movement, Kato sto jalo is a zeibekiko, a slow-paced dance performed by only one man at a time which was apparently originated among the warriors of Ancient Anatolia. The third and last movement, Chasaposerviko, is the fast part of the hasapiko dance and is characterized by its more extensive form. A new journey into the Greek folk tradition that will delight both performers and audience.

Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Windsin 2008, giving them the tag line An American Band with a British Accent , as he wanted to combine the best of both countries bandtraditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs, which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the ClearAir and The Piper o Dundee & Men of Harlech.

A great concert/festival work for the young band by well known composer Robert W. Smith, Appalachian Folk Dance is a lively work inspired by the folk songs and dances of the early American pioneers. Using only the first six notes introduced in most band methods, Appalachian Folk Dance gives the young and developing band a strong musical experience while reinforcing skills and concepts introduced in their band method. The band and the audience will love the interactive call and response with the percussion section! An exceptional teaching tool for beginning bands everywhere!

“Slane,” an Irish folk song that appears towards the end of Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, is a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody “The Banks of the Bann.” In this composition, fragments of this melody are introduced, hinting at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This theme later acts as a descant to “Slane” when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. Duration: 4:00.

The rich heritage of French-Canadian folk music dates back several centuries. Robert has chosen three of these songs to create a musical portrait of this colorful culture. The opening piece is the jaunty and dance-like Monsieur Lecure, followed by the hauntingly beautiful Blanche Comme la Neige. The piece concludes with the spirited march Vive la Canadienne!, which features a drum break and builds to an exciting, rousing finish. The creative use of harmonizations, key changes and dynamic contrasts gives this piece a sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:35.
