The first volume of our new series with music to the hymnal Gotteslob assembles 30 pieces for Advent and Christmas, previously unknown pieces between baroque and present times, particularly convenient for liturgical use. About a third of the pieces was composed specifically for this edition. Most of the songs are suitable for ecumenical use.

Hermann Schroeder's abundant oeuvre in the field of chorale-bound organ music is much less known among organists than his free - especially the concertante - organ works, although Hermann Schroeder as an organist felt particularly bound to liturgy and liturgical singing. And according to him, any liturgical organ music should always bear a direct relation to singing. The purpose of the present anthology is to provide the player a representative selection of Schroeder's chorale arrangements. Most of these chorales are relatively short and of medium difficulty at most. The chorale melody can be heard well most of the time so that the pieces are ideal for being used in church services. In the alphabetical index, the beginnings of song titles are accompanied by the corresponding number from Gotteslob (GL) or the Protestant Hymnal for better orientation.

The second volume continues with 43 compositions for the time of Holy Lent and Easter. For this time of year the new hymnal Gotteslob contains a great number of new songs. Therefore more than 20 pieces are commissioned renditions for this edition - for many songs they are even the first chorale arrangements overall. The collection presents some previously unknown pieces between baroque and present times. The pieces are quite easy to learn and take between two and five minutes playing time and are particularly suitable for the recessional and for the communion.

There are two main innovations: firstly the inclusion of the congregation through communal songs, and secondly, the frequent use of the main organ - as accompaniment to the congregational hymns as well as during the important preludes and postludes of the two parts 'Maundy Thursday' and 'Good Friday,' of which the Passion consists. (Kirchenmusik im Bistum Limburg 1/1990). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4019700.
