In 1725, J.S. Bach gave his second wife, Anna Magdalena, a Notenbüchlein - a collection of solo keyboard pieces and arias. Most of the keyboard pieces were composed by friends, colleagues, and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The easier keyboard works were probably used to instruct their children, while the arias would have been performed by Anna Magdalena, who was a singer. For this edition, Edwin McLean has chosen and expertly edited the most popular and easier keyboard pieces. Originally, the pieces contained no dynamics and virtually no phrasing, which is typical of baroque harpsichord music and even early 18th-century fortepiano music. Sectional dynamics have been added editorially and may be changed at the discretion of the performer. A minimal amount of phrasing and articulation has also been added for clarity. This edition preserves the original notation for appoggiaturas, where small eighth or quarter notes resolve to the principal note. Ossias have been included to show how to play them; ossias also appear when needed for ornaments such as trills and mordents.

A Tedious Brief Scene: Bottom's Dance (2011) is a fine example of Holmes work from her career as a composer and educator in New Zealand for over 25 years. Holmes was inspired to depict the character Bottom from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in writing this lighthearted work. It is highly engaging and energetic with elements of minimalist techniques of layered melodic ostinati, and jazz-influenced and non-tonal harmony. Juhani Nuorvala (b. 1961) wrote The Five Chords That Shook My World (2020) for pianist Nicolas Horvath's Hommage a Glass project and it is dedicated to him. It's a fantasy meditation on the Train/Spaceship chords in Einstein, that repeating five-chord progression (Fm - Db - A - B7 - E) about which the composer has said that there's something strange, because it never fails to lift the audience to its feet. The duration of the piece is c. 6'30'', and it was premiered by Emil Holmstrom at RUSK festival (Pietarsaari, Finland) 20th November 2020. A notable variety of influences - microtonality, American minimalism, New Romanticism, popular music, techno - has been regarded as a special feature of Nuorvala's idiom. Despite this he is not a collage artist; instead he has blended various ingredients to create a mode of expression entirely his own. Nuorvala's works are often marked with frenzied rhythmic drive. He makes music using elements and materials that both the mind and the body respond to. He finds these elements not only in old or new classical music but in various forms of urban popular music, such as the electronic music of modern dance clubs.

The first thing that appears in a Sonatas' volume is the thematic index, which reproduces the first bars of all of them. In my Sonata I have tried to reproduce an accumulative scheme of some imaginary sonatas' first bars, as a kind of fragmented mosaic made by minimal elements. Composed in Kristiansand (Norway) during Summer 1995, it was premiered by Humberto Quagliatta, at the Hamburg (Germany) Hochschule fur Musik, on October 20th, same year.
