Ola Gjeilo, born in 1978 in Norway, moved to the United States when he was 23 years old to study composition at the Julliard School. He composed this dense and richly textured setting of the Sanctus for the Uranienborg Vokalensemble shortly after he graduated in 2006. Eric Wilson has skillfully captured the magic of the original choral work in this transcription for winds. Ola Gjeilo stated the following regarding Sanctus: “It's one piece of mine that remains closest to my heart.†Dur: 4:20 (Recorded by the Baylor Wind Ensemble, J. Eric Wilson, conductor).

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed his (Latin) Sanctus in E flat from 1768-1778, when he was the director of music for the churches of Hamburg. This short and solemn work for choir and orchestra was intended for the liturgy of Communion at Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The present edition is based on a copy of the manuscript which is preserved in the music archives of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. It was believed to have been lost following the second world war, but was recently discovered by Professor Christoph Wolff in Kiev.

Ultimately, he is a pupil for whom I need not feel embarrassed, wrote J. S. Bach, summarizing the qualities of his son-in-law to be, J. C: Altnickol. Altnickol's two settings of the Sanctus, based on a Gregorian cantus firmus, are among his few works which have survived. While in the second of these compositions he chose to write a polyphonic choral setting, in the present Sanctus he allows all four voices of the choir to sing unisono, accompanied by a polyphonically treated string ensemble. In both compositions, however, he proves himself to be a contrapuntalist fully worthy of Bach's appraisal. Score available separately - see item CA.2708700.

Latin. Text source: From the Eucharistic Liturgy of the Roman Rite. Scripture: Isaiah 6:3, Psalm 118:26, Matthew 21:9, Revelation 4:8.
An a cappella polyphonic setting based on the Sanctus chant of Mass XVIII. Though not particularly complex, the extensive divisi requires fairly sizeable forces, and the harmonic texture requires careful attention to intonation. The end result creates a powerfully rich sonority.
