There are two primary ideas behind this composition, the first being to create and almost orchestral chamber music, the idea for this coming from a performance of the Grosse Fuge performed by the Arditti Quartet. The second idea was to excercise the impressive and oppresive history of the string quartet by making the work a compendium of quotations from quartet repertoire. Influence from Schoenberg can be heard in chromatic, harmonic sequences and modal/diatonic varioations are also actively displayed within the piece. The quartet is written with amplification in mind and it is the composer's preference that it is performed in this way. String Quartet No.1 is dedicated to the memory of Thurston Dart. It was commissioned by the Arditti Quartet and first performed by them on 23 September 1985, Warsaw. Duration 26 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on sale.

Antony Clare was born in Nottingham in 1964. He read music at York University and has subsequently combined private instrumental teaching with a range of performing activities. He has formed several successful partnerships with local musicians, focusing on the contemporary music repertoire. In addition to being one half of SCAW (with Sarah Watts, bass clarinet), he particularly enjoys performing 20th century English song repertoire and playing chamber music for piano and wind as pianist with the Hough Ensemble. His composition 'Sybil' was written for bass clarinet soloist Sarah Watts, who did extensive research on bass clarinet multiphonics. This piece is a great illustration on the integration of multiphonics in contemporary music.

A Tambourin is a lively dance with two beats. Originally from Provence is was often accompanied by a pipe and a tambourine. Melodic simplicity and poignant rhythm were characteristic features, often imitating the hand striking the percussion instrument. They were most popular widespread across France and Europe in the 18th Century, this dance often inspired the more sophisticated court composers, especially in France. This volume consists of 14 Tambourines by some of the great composers including Philibert de Lavigne, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Georg Friedrich Handel and Jean-Marie Leclair, all arranged for Guitar and Flute by Bent Larsen and Jan Sommer.

“Four roads lead to Santiago,†so begins the Book of the Pilgrim. Written in the 12th century, the Codex Calixtinus opened the way for pilgrimage from most cities in Europe and North Africa to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Compostela - The Way of St James describes the pilgrims' journey. After a slow introduction, a brilliant theme announces the start of the journey. The arrival in Spain is indicated by incantatory chants and majestic chords. Finally, the music softens as the pilgrims venerate St James.

Der Erlkönig, or The Elf King, is based on Johann Goethe's late 18th-century poem of the same name in which a father and his young son ride home on horseback one dark and eerie night. The father tries to calm the increasingly fearful son by explaining everything the boy reports as simply leaves rustling in the wind or willows moving in the fog. Nonetheless, the father rides faster and faster home only to find the boy is dead in his arms when they arrive. Goethe's dark and gothic tale is brought to spine-tingling life in this harrowing, fast-paced tone poem for band. (3:20) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Silent night: This arrangement of the traditional carol by Franz Gruber and Joseph Muhr (translated into English by John Freeman Young) was written by Anna Lapwood and the Pembroke College GirlsÂ? Choir for their end of term party for the families of the choristers. The aim was to produce an arrangement manageable for the youngest choristers whilst stretching the older ones with some slightly jazzy harmonies. It was written in one 75-minute rehearsal, and performed to the parents straight after. The choir has written a new pieceat the end of every term since. Gaudete: This arrangement of the 16th-century carol was written during a full weekend of group composition with Anna Lapwood and the Pembroke College Girls' Choir, a process with which they had experimented previously. The choir decided to create rhythmic impetus and drive, which is delivered from the outset in the introductory material. This figure is repeated under the refrain for the first three verses, while the verses themselves are presented in simple unison. The final verse is harmonised and crescendos towards the uplifting key change for the final refrain, giving a sense of climax, which may be highlighted further with an optional tambourine.
