Commissioned by Caramoor Music Festival in New York and premiered July 14, 2017 by the Argus Quartet, this work is in no small part a response to this quartet's sense of adventure and expressive emotional range. Inspired by two end-of-civilization novels the composer was reading prior to composing the work, the quartet unfolds in a single movement, loosely based on plot lines in both novels. One of the novels includes a Traveling Symphony, an assortment of musicians and actors who travel the countryside for decades playing symphonies, jazz and orchestral arrangements of popular music alongside performances of Shakespeare plays, reminiscent of medieval troupes traveling the countryside in plague-ridden times. The work is written so that the quartet embodies the Traveling Symphony, not only playing music but also singing and 'stage whispering' fragments of King Lear and other text across the collection of nine scenes.

From the numerous reported signs of Big Foot to spectacular views, the opening embodies many different moods. An energetic section introduces small elements of America, the Beautiful before being fully realized in a powerful moment reflective of when Katharine Lee Bates reached the summit herself in 1883 and penned the words shortly thereafter. Cantate Domino means âsing a new song to the Lord,â and this composition truly embodies its meaning. Beginning in 7/8, the opening motif is a short statement in Latin, then English, that establishes the macaronic character of the piece. William Powell selected this motet for his new choral series that features fine music useful in festivals and concert. Medium to difficult.

Originally published by Carl Fischer in 1932, The Fencing Master by Captain James C. Harper, former director of the famed Lenoir High School Band (Lenoir, North Carolina), is a rediscovered treasure in the concert march world. A fencing master is defined as an expert in, and teacher of, the art and sport of fencing. This sport uses a sword both in an offensive and defensive stance. This march embodies the idea of fencing and the fencing master.Captain Harper used this march as part of his application to the American Bandmasters Association where he later served as president of this organization in 1955 and was also a lifetime honorary president. Captain Harper was also a strong driving force in the creation of the North Carolina Chapter of the American School Band Directors Association. This chapter of the ASBDA is one of the oldest and largest in the country. The famed Lenoir High School Band was the center of Captain Harper’s dedication for quality music education. The Lenoir High School Band continues to be internationally known for a staggering forty-two-year consecutive streak of Superior Ratings in Grade VI state Concert Band Contests. This streak was from 1935 until the school’s closing in 1977 as part of a school merger in Caldwell County. As a fellow native of Lenoir, North Carolina, the revitalization of this concert march has been a special project for me. May this revived gem serve as a tribute to the legacy of Captain Harper and his famed Lenoir High School Band.

In Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, the girl Mignon embodies the longing for Italy. In the novel, she sings the song Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen bluhn [Do you know the country where the lemon trees flower]. Charles Gounod set a free translation of the text by Louis Gallet in 1871. At the appassionato, melodies heavy with longing over a piano part with flowing triplet figurations express the wanderlust for the country where die Orangen wie Gold glanzen! This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

This large-scale three-movement work, commissioned by Ray Cramer and the Indiana University Wind Ensemble, embodies the transformation of silence into sound. The opening movement is sparse, utilizing mallet percussion, harp, and piano to create a floating sense of timelessness. Featuring extensive solo flute, this floating texture gradually builds over several minutes, ultimately launching itself into a grandiose, warm, harmonically consonant blanket of sound. The second movement continues the focus on solo flute, and again opens slowly, gradually gaining momentum, but at a faster pace than in the first movement. The music spirals upward and outward, but instead of reaching a plateau, winds itself out and comes to a grinding halt in the upper range of the ensemble. Five brief, solemn chords conclude the movement, which immediately erupts into Movement III, music of unceasing, unsettling, motion, propelled by a driving ostinato which is repeatedly interrupted by bittersweet moments of lyricism, all the while pushing toward an unforgiving climax. The movements may also be performed separately. There is no explicit narrative to the piece, though many particular elements do have personal quasi-biographical significance. Ultimately, this is music of both personal and musical transformation.NOTE: This work is available as a rental item directly from the composer. For details, e-mail rental@stevenbryant.com. The score is also available separately for purchase from Hal Leonard.
