Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi. It takes some of his most famous melodies and reimagines them in styles of Samba, Bossa Nova and Tango to produce a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet and orchestra. The work is structured in three movements. The titles of the movements do not only indicate from which operas the main melodies were taken, they also function as a hint to the styles in which the movements are written. The first movement, titled Il Sambatore, is a Samba based primarily on the melodic material from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The second one, Un Bossa in Maschera, is a slow Bossa Nova and consists of an aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. The third and the most virtuosic movement is called Don Tangoletto and derives most of its material from Don Carlos and Rigoletto. The piece exists in 4 versions: Solo clarinet with either full orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet or piano. Chopin published his Scherzi nos. 1 3 at more-or-less regular intervals, in 1835, 1837 and 1840 almost as if he'd planned them in advance. He published his fourth and final work in this genre after a further three years, in 1843. When compared with its predecessors, which were largely bleak in mood, this Scherzo no. 4 is surprisingly cheerful. With its sparkling runs and its chains of chords like dappled brush strokes, this work seems to summon up the fairy-like spirit of Mendelssohn's scherzi. In editorial terms, however, it is problematical. Three parallel first editions were published in Germany, France and England and the many variants between them have to be investigated one at a time to determine their authenticity. This is a task that has been solved meticulously in this revised, stand-alone Urtext edition, which explains the transmission of this work in an exemplary, transparent manner for today's pianists.

Peter Cornelius once described himself as a poet-composer, for he wrote the texts for many of his songs himself. This is the case with In Lust und Schmerzen, the first song of the three Liebeslieder which make up op. 4. Cornelius composed these songs in 1854 in Weimar, where he was living near Franz Liszt whom he greatly admired. Liszt's influence can be discerned in the urgent piano accompaniment and the cumulative chromaticism which Cornelius chose as a means of expressing the emotional content of the text in music, alternating between Lust und Leiden, between Kampf und Ruh. The marking Leidenschaftlich bewegt [passionately agitated] aptly describes the character of the song. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

There are many composers of whom it is said today that they had gone back in time or had composed against contemporary taste. Millay’s descriptions of nature, and of feelings and emotions, have always spoken to me. SECOND APRIL consists of four of her poems, each with a distinctive mood, message, and emotional feel. They are vivid, powerful, and beautiful, inspiring me to capture these descriptions of the various scenes she portrays. Song of a Second April uses music to underlie strong feelings, passions, and the tragedies of life. The poem itself is dramatic, detailing a time of personal strife and tragedy, perhaps the end of a relationship or even the end of a life. The music is intense, fast, in a minor key, and with rapid, spinning notes creating a feeling of powerful, relentless emotions. Melodies, motives, and gestures are tossed between the voices, increasing the feelings of intensity and even desperation. Little by little, the music almost dies away, getting quieter and quieter, creating a feeling of resignation, but with a Picardy Third in the final chord – maybe a bit of hope! Mariposa is a celebration of nature, wandering through a field with white and blue butterflies appearing almost wondrously. But there’s also a profound feeling of poignancy, noting that as one relishes such a beautiful, magical sight, they should embrace the experience – the fleeting, transient nature of such a perfect vision and of life itself. It is about both tragedy and resilience. This music is also in minor, yet with moments of playfulness, as a recollection of happy times or moments takes over. This seesaw between emotions is heard throughout the movement, as the music continues to “dance.” And with Millay’s summing up of “reality being what it is,” the piece ends with strength, boldness, and finality. Into the Golden Vessel of Great Song is an appassionato call to overcome! The poem exhorts us to “sing out” with hope, determination, and strength. The music is full of bright and lilting energy; but as the turmoil and times of strife people can sometimes feel or experience, the music becomes intense, dramatic, in a minor key, and with changing rhythms. BUT, there is a return to championing the idea of simply overcoming, going forward with hope and determination, and the music is in major, resonant and strong. .
