After finishing a serious woodwind quintet in the fall of 2001 [Tela Lacerata], I found, in the ensuing months, that its cinders/ashes were still impregnating my eardrums. Therefore, when I set out to write the present string piece, I realized that the musical veins of the quartet, like related cousins, were sharing the same blood as the earlier wind composition. The resultant Fifth Quartet evolved into two large, extended movements, each one containing seven parts that are played without pause. As the list of the various sub-sections clearly indicates, the formal structure of the movements appear to be identical: each with three main parts enveloped by interludes, plus an introduction and coda. However, the principal segments of the first (slow) movement gradually decrease in length, while those of the second (fast) movement increase. In addition, there is a goodly amount of sonic material stolen from the first movement which reappears -- stitched together in a new guise -- into the world of the second. for example, the bulk of Parts B and C of Movement II are lifted bodily, although elaborately modified, from their first appearances in the Introduction and Part A of the fist movement. This offers, I suppose at least a hint of a traditional recapitulation. As was true in the earlier woodwind piece -- both harmonically and melodically -- the embryonic growth of the musical fabric (primarily the tritone and perfect fifth) is omnipresent, almost obsessively, throughout the course of the whole work. These two intervals, not unlike plasticine, habitually transform themselves into the scales, chords, and melodic lines that pervade the texture of the quartet. Owing to the largely unrelieved dramatic flow, the shifting speed, and the often fervent intensity, the quartet places considerable demands on the dexterity, virtuosity, and stamina of the four performers. String Quartet No. 5 is approximately 22 minutes in duration and affectionately dedicated to my violinist wife Elizabeth, as a gift for our 47 years together. It was commissioned by the Corigliano String Quartet, New York, NY. -- Sydney Hodkinson.

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the ‘Siena Wind Orchestra’. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy ‘one tone fanfare’. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C D E flat B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

This edition of the 28 variations on the aria Ich schlief, da traumte mir for flute and bassa continuo by Johann Joachim Quantz, published here for the first time, is based on a manuscript in the Preussischen Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, whose title reads: Solo Traverso cole Basso Achtundzwantzig Variation es uber die Arie Ich schlief da traumte mir del Sigr: Qvanz The high degree which the art of flute playing had reached at that time is very clearly displayed in this set of variations, a form unusual in Quantz's output. For this reason, this work is very suitable as a study as weil as for performance. The realization of the figured bass and the indications of phrasing merely represent one of many possibilities, and are only intended as suggestions. The source is in places full of errors, and these have been tacitly corrected. Frank Nagel, Basel, June 1974.

In 1990 a short score of Strauss's late masterpiece Metamorphosen was discovered in Switzerland and acquired by the Bavarian State Library in Munich. It is headed 'Metamorphosen. Andante (für 2 Violinen, 2 Bratschen, 2 Celli[,] Contrabass) Richard Strauss'. This gives rise to the assumption that the composer had clearly conceived the piece as scored for seven strings and then changed his mindon receiving a commission from Paul Sacher to write a work for a larger string group. The short score bears the date 31 March 1945 at the end, the full score for twenty-three strings having already been started on 13 March. Rudolf Leopold, concert cellist and professor of cello at the University of Music, Graz, prepared the septet performing version of Metamorphosen, of which the study score was published in 1996. He explains that, for the most part, the 23-part version consists of doublings. “In the realisation of the 'original version' for string sextet and double bass I have made use of both the short score and the final score so that the complete tonal image appears in a chamber music format whilst retaining certain interesting details from the short score (for example the original closing modulation).â€.

In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music. This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.

A striking setting of an original text, beautifully written for Alto solo with mixed choir by one of the best new church choral writers of the day, this choral anthem is perfect for anniversary Sundays, All Saints Day, or mission-emphasis worship. The words state very clearly, the vision and purpose of the Christian Church, while calling believers to accountability for responding to the challenge of life today. Musically, the piece is dynamic, lush and powerful, and incorporates the familiar hymn Lead On, O King Eternal, that fits well with the spirit and message. An accompaniment track offers full instrumental support for choirs and soloist.

Johannes Brahms was long reluctant to compete with Beethoven in the field of symphonic music. With his D-major Serenade in six movements, the young composer deliberately chose a genre that had had its golden era in the 18th century, thus before Beethoven. Initially, he even conceived the Serenade for a smaller setting, but decided on a full orchestra in 1860. But even then, it was slow in becoming an audience success. The new Brahms Complete Edition has chosen as its principal source a copy of the scores first edition that Brahms used as his personal work copy. There, however, errors remained undiscovered, and recurred in later print runs as well. It was not until the new Brahms Edition that a music text of the D-major Serenade is finally being published, a text that clearly heeds all of the composers emendations and eliminates other shortcomings.

‘God rest ye merry, Gentlemen’ is an ancient English carol. It was first published in 1833, but it can be traced as far back as the 15th century, which makes it one of the oldest carols known. ‘God rest ye merry’ is a Middle English salutation. In this manner, people wished one another greatness and might. In modern English, the first line of this carol would read ‘May God keep you mighty, gentlemen’. Andrew R. Mackereth has not kept to the original words in his up-tempo arrangement of the carol. It is still clearly recognizable, but the arranger has taken a good many liberties. Sometimes a particular note is held longer, at times motifs follow oneanother in various parts. If you listen carefully, you may even be able to detect a motif from another well-known song. Men wenste elkaar kracht toe. May God keep you gentleman strong’.
