Shchedrin's oeuvre spans nearly every musical genre, and it is hardly surprising that an output of such versatility contains some rather remarkable instrumental combinations, for example Music from afar for 2 bass recorders, or Balalaika for a solo violin playing pizzicato throughout. This predilection for the unusual leads the composer in Parabola concertante with its basically subdued and contemplative mood to add a charcteristic counterpoint by contrasting the accompanying string orchestra with timpani. The piece was composed for master virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovitch, who played the solo part in the first performance at the International Cello Festival in Kronberg. Cello, string orchestra, and timpani. Piano reduction with solo part.

The 24 minutes long work consists of a single enormous movement (...fantasia...) and a coda containing two parts (coda: recitativo ed epilogo). The range of tone colour in the composition is undoubtedly the key element in its effectiveness, Kurtág luxuriates in the possibilities offered by the two solo instruments and the huge orchestra. His instrumentation is magical, the exceptionally big percussion section is enriched with the incomparable sound of a new instrument, the steel drum. The concertante was premiered in 2003 in Copenhagen by Hiromi Kikuchi, Ken Hakii and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Schonwand. In 2006, this work won the University ofLouisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. The performance rights of the violin and viola solo parts have been reserved for Hiromi Kikuchi and Ken Hakii.

The Sonate concertante in G major for piano and flute was published posthumously, as the composer's oeuvre dernier, by S. A. Steiner in Vienna in 1810. The present edition is based on the printed copy in the Musikarchiv of the Stift Melk, Austria. The instrumental parts are of equal importance and of moderate difficulty, and the work maintains an effective balance between melodic, virtuoso and even slightly contrapuntal elements. This is a worthy addition to the Viennese classical flute repertoire.
