Bach's harpsichord concertos have proven extremely popular, though several were originally written as concertos for another solo instrument - either violin or a woodwind instrument. But we know nothing about any such preliminary versions in the case of the A-major Concerto BWV 1055. Its enchantingly songlike middle movement inevitably makes one think of the oboe damore, though there is in fact no reason to suppose that its idiomatic, spirited harpsichord writing was conceived from the outset for anything but a keyboard instrument. Ultimately, this music is so fresh and irresistible that all such speculation is irrelevant. For this Henle Urtext edition of the A-major Concerto, we consulted the autograph score and especially the original orchestral parts that presumably contain the musical text of the concerto as Bach himself performed it. You can't get more authentic than this!

The present work originated in Leipzig between 1730 and 1733. It is Johann Sebastian Bach's best-known harpsichord concerto and, from a technical point of view, may be considered as his most typical harpsichord concerto.

Bach's harpsichord concerti, extremely popular among pianists, are presumably reworkings of pieces originally written for the violin. Bach, however, succeeded in transferring the diverse idiosyncrasies of violin technique to the keyboard with such ingenuity that most of today's pianists also include these concerti in their standard repertoire. The first concerto in D minor is perhaps the most popular - not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. Now, as a prelude to a series of all of Bach's harpsichord concerti, G. Henle Publishers presents a piano reduction and study edition (score) of the D-minor concerto. None other than András Schiff, the outstanding Bach expert, has provided fingering suggestions.

Johannes Umbreit (piano reduction); Michael Schneidt (fingering) Two copies needed for performance It is almost impossible to tell from listening to them that Bach's extremely popular concerti for harpsichord were probably his own transcriptions of solo concerti which had originally been composed for violin or a woodwind instrument. The outer movements of the second concerto, in E major, probably written around 1738, sparkle with joy, while the expressive melodic lines of the middle movement, the Siciliano in C-sharp minor, transport the listener to the realm of his Passion music. G. Henle Publishers presents this repertoire standard in an Urtext edition with an extensive commentary. The study edition (HN 7381) features the complete orchestral score; the piano reduction (HN 1381) contains the solo part as well as a very playable piano reduction of the score prepared by Johannes Umbreit for practical use.

These three solo harpsichord pieces are a collection of recent compositions, each with an individual theme and idea. The first, The convertibility of Lute Strings, was first performed at the Purcell Room, London in 1992. The second, Tango for Tim was written in memory of a friend and composer Tim Souster, which was composed and first performed in 1994. The third piece, Elisabeth Gets Her Way, is an extended version of the cadenza which Elisabeth Chojnacka persuaded Michael Nyman to add to his Harpsichord Concerto, which includes material from the first two pieces in this album.

A variable solo concerto in A minor
ISBN 9790004488423. 9 x 12 inches.
The concertos in A minor, B flat major and A major constitute a small but amazingly flexible group in Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's work catalogue. They were written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753, and have all been transmitted in alternative versions as flute and harpsichord concertos as well. C. P. E. Bach wrote the Cello Concerto in A minor Wq 170 at the Berlin court of King Frederick the Great. The flute version Wq 166 was probably written shortly thereafter, even if the only surviving source dates from after the composer's death. We can see how interchangeable the solo instruments were through the amazing circumstance that editor Ulrich Leisinger was able to draw upon the version for harpsichord solo Wq 26 for this new edition. The cadenzas to the first and second movements proved to be easily adaptable to the flute, which should inspire soloists to create their own versions.A variable solo concerto in A minor.

The present edition is derived from the justified assumption that Bach's Harpsichord Concertos BWV 1052-58 are original arrangements of solo concertos for other instruments, and can be reconstructed back to their original work form on the basis of the characteristics found in the solo parts. The editor of the present concerto chooses the oboe - an instrument that often plays characteristically exposed roles in Bach's cantatas - as the solo for his transformation of the Harpsichord Concerto in f minor BWV 1056, whereby the work was transposed one whole-tone higher. The Sinfonia of the Cantata BWV 156 Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe provides the editor with an orientation in his reconstruction of the slow middle movement.

This volume completes Henle's urtext series of Joseph Haydn's three piano concertos. Written in or around 1765, the delightful first concerto is ideally suited for playing at home, for the relatively undemanding part for piano (or harpsichord) is accompanied merely by a string quartet. This edition draws on the musical text in our complete edition of Haydn's works, guaranteeing an urtext of the finest quality.
