Mendelssohn's Athalia, i.e. the incidental music to Racine's tragedy Athalie, occupies a special place among the composer's incidental works for stage plays. The composer began by setting the original French text (Vol. V/9A) before expanding his concept step by step for the German version. He revised this version several times - and especially the closing chorus - for the first performance in 1845. The work was not published during the composer's lifetime, which means that, in consideration of Mendelssohn's notorious self-criticism, there is no definitive final version. Armin Koch has taken up the editorial challenge and, with his great knowledgeability, cleared up all questions concerning the authentic form of the work.

Some of the Ten Piano Pieces op. 58 were already successfully performed during the composers lifetime. At a concert in the Solemnity Hall of Helsinki University on 10 October 1911, two of the pieces (Scherzino No. 2, Serenade No. 9) had to be repeated because of the roar of applause.. Both Sibelius and Mrs. Sigrid Sundgren-Schneevoigt were called forth with storming applause. The reviews were good, describing the pieces as the most ingenious piano compositions reduced to a small form, that have been published in Finland.

Bennington, VT composer Frederic Sharaf had written many solos for Mezzo-soprano with his wife Jane in mind. Our recently released Three Settings from Imitations by Robert Lowell (CF.V2498) was premiered by Jane in a competition in 1971, which allowed her to undertake a summer study program at Yale. After a lifetime in music and education, Jane Sharaf passed away in August, 2007. Frederic continues to compose, in part as catharsis, with a string of love ballads for Mezzo-soprano and piano, among his other works. Many of these ballads, including The Anniversary (above) and the Three Settings, were recently released on CD by Kara Cornell and Michael Clement. The duo also performed these works in Albany, in a concert entitled Gems of the Region: Music by Local American Composers. We are pleased to make available three more representative works by Frederic Sharaf for piano solo.
