This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The compositionis a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashinonamed the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also a premiere in Spring”. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

Flowers bloom and the world stirs with life renewed in Spring’s Awakening! The music begins with a driving ostinato in the clarinets, and staggered entrances that portray flowers opening for the first time. After the entire ensemble enters, two different melodic themes are passed throughout the ensemble, layered over driving 8th-note rhythms that propel the music forward. Spring’s Awakening is an engaging and beautiful work that makes a perfect fit for any spring or end of the year concert.

My Spring Diary (Min Forårsdagbog) - Piano Pieces Vol. 2 by Karl Aage Rasmussen . Programme note In this, the second volume of My Spring Diary, which depicts the progress of the day from afternoon to night, the technical difficulties are generally greater than in vol. 1, and all the pieces are for piano solo. Freer use is made of the various types of notation which were introduced in the first volume. The 8 th piece (“Day’s End”) uses towards the end the type of notation called “open form”. The piece is a kind of musical resumé of the whole collection – elements of the earlier pieces reappear and at the end of the piecethe performer can exercise control over the way in which these elements are combined. The sequence of the individual groups is free, and it is not obligatory to play all of them. The only limitation is that the arrows within the individual groups must be followed and that the piece should end with the short passage marked “conclusion”.  .

This Spring music forms part of the cycle The Seasons, a collection for piano containing the previously published pieces Balta ainava (White Landscape) and Rudens musika (Autumn music). Nature in all its shapes and the relationship of humans to Nature play an important role in Vask's works. Many of his works have programmatic titles associated with this theme, such as landscapes of burnt earth and music for migrating birds.

It is springtime: days become longer, birds prepare to nest, trees grow greener, and plants begin to flower. In short, nature awakens from its winter sleep. This, along with the fact that the composer's third grandchild was born in the spring, is the inspiration for Spring Song. Duration: 3:45 (Grade 4).

Commissioned by CODA (Choral Organizations & Developing Artists), composer Richard Burchard selected a poem by Christina Rossetti that celebrates spring in a more pensive way. Speaking poetically of how spring passes ultimately into death, Burchard's music is thoughtful and soothing. Accompanied by piano and French Horn, the piece is primarily SAB, with only slight TB divisions at the very end.

1. Arrival Dream 2. Snow Squalls 3. It Happens 4. East Wind 5. A Clearer Memory The contrasting aspects of nature are a major theme in the work of Rhian Samuel, and in her song cycle Spring Diary for baritone and piano she responds passionately to its vernal magic. Beginning in dream and ending in memory, the five movements of the collection are a dramatic response to the turning season in Wales, conveyed through the fine detail of its characteristic weather and landscape as observed by the poet Anne Stevenson. Premiered at London's City University, Spring Diary is excellent material for graduate singers and pianists, who will draw inspiration from its vivid and assured word-setting and substantial and evocative keyboard part.

Outi Tarkiainen's The Earth, Spring's Daughter - A Song Cycle for Mezzosoprano and Chamber Orchestra (2015). Spiral bound. Texts (in English and Sami) by Rose-Marie Huuva, Rauni Magga Lukkari, Timo Malmi, Aila Meriluoto, Leena Morottaja and Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa. Transl. by Veikko Holmberg. Compiled by Outi Tarkiainen. Program note: Eanan, gida nieida (in Engl. The Earth, Spring's Daughter) is a mythical epos illustrating the core experiences of the North from the history to our times. The text is a vast collage of Sami poetry - the Sami people being the only indigenous people in the Europe. The strong mutual bond between the generations and the Sami culture's cyclical perception of time are present also in the structure of the work: the music unfolds in layers and cycles, to be born again and again. The work was commissioned by three northernmost professional orchestras in Europe: Lapland Chamber Orchestra (FIN), Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra (SWE) and Arctic Philharmonic (NOR). Dedicated to John Storgards and Ulla-Maija Kanerva. First performance: Lapland Chamber Orchestra 1.9.2016, cond. John Storgards, Virpi Raisanen, mezzosoprano. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk.
