Known professionally as Hauschka, composer Volker Bertelmann has catapulted himself into the top tier of instrumental composers. This is proven, not least, by the Oscar nomination which he received for his soundtrack to the2016 film Lion.
In his latest album A Different Forest, released on 8 February 2019 at Sony Classical, Hauschka takes the forest as a contrast to the urban life. The names of the pieces, such as 'Talking To My Father',testify equally that those natural experiences are metaphorical of the important things in life.
For this album Hauschka renounces entirely his prepared Piano. The existential questions which he musically poses, however, donot lose their intensity, but rather, without the alienation by electronic elements, gain urgency.
In addition to the 13 LP tracks, this songbook for Piano also contains three exclusive arrangements of previouslyunreleased songs: 'Collecting Stones', 'Loosing Directions' and 'Misty Day'.
Titels zoals Talking To My Father tonen dat deze ervaringen in de natuur metaforen zijn voor belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het leven. In seinem neusten Album A Different Forest“ am 08.

Experienced piano instructor Manfred Schmitz had already ventured out into the open air in his Spielwiese (or Playground, DV 30065). In his Green Childrens-Song-Piano, he is now striking out on a new path that will take young performers to another exciting new playground: chamber music. Schmitz added an easy piano part to the most famous German childrens songs, along with equally easy upper parts which can be played by a recorder, violin or other melody instrument. He selected the childrens songs chiefly on the basis of their popularity: The Green Childrens-Song-Piano is something very special: its songs are really everGREEN!Schmitz added an easy piano part to the most famous German children's songs, along with equally easy upper parts which can be played by a recorder, violin or other melody instrument.

Despite a strong vocation for the cello, which he studied and began to play with a distinctive character, Pau Casals, like most ambitious, creative musicians, wrote at the piano and for the piano, as it is the ultimate teaching instrument, summarising the full vision of the creative process. Any creative musician habitually worked at the piano, whether for this instrument alone or for piano accompanied by other solo instruments. To date, it has not been possible to document whether Casals had systematic training on this instrument, although at that time it was more common than it is today because, considering its qualities of timbre and combination, it was particularly attractive for creating test pieces and different kinds of compositions. The piano works contained in this second volume include part of the salon repertoire, a continuation of the first volume, and four sardanas for piano of diverse origin: some are reductions of more complex forms and others sketches for instrumental groups. In the first group, some works intended for children are published, a demonstration of the tenderness the ‘cellist felt for the children of his closest friends. In the second case, the sardanas are works from his first exile in Prada and show the nostalgia of the composer, away from his country against his will.In general, the works are not especially complex; their purpose and nature are diverse. They come in the context of salon music, with the appearance of creative entertainments characterised by a basically tonal, transparent language with a widespread tendency to modulate to nearby keys more as a momentary expressive resource than as a structural evolutionary procedure. They show a lack of systematic work on the instrument as well as the commonplaces of piano composition of their time. In some of these works, the piano thread breaks, the works do not have the thrust of finished products; the occasional appearance of chords that are difficult or impossible to finger leads us to think of intentions closer to test pieces than to products intended for normal performance. But not all these piano works are circumstantial. There is also a prelude and a minuet of a certain piano writing complexity.

The series Studies for Playing Contemporary Music for ... offers a collection of short contemporary pieces for the resp. Solo instrument. The series addresses musicians who are particularly interested in contemporary music and seek ways of becoming familiar with this domain. Many pieces were written especially for these collections. The editors have especially stressed that the contributions should, on the one hand, correspond to the personality of the composer and, on the other hand, treat definite technical and musical problems. Meanwhile, several have made it into the repertoire of solo literature. Other pieces have been drawn from larger works. Particular on the notation of the respective pieces are contained in the comments. There the instructions of the editor for the instrumental realization as well as, if necessary, the composers' own explanations are given.

About Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education. The important elements of the Suzuki approach to instrumental teaching include the following:an early start (aged 3-4 is normal in most countries); the importance of listening to music; learning to play before learning to read; -the involvement of the parent; a nurturing and positive learning environment; a high standard of teaching by trained teachers; the importance of producing a good sound in a balanced and natural way; core repertoire, used by Suzuki students across the world; social interaction with other children. Suzuki students from all over the world can communicate through the language of music.

''In this composition I was not searching for the conventional possibilities of the piano quintet, but for the acoustic distance between the two types of sound. The sounds of the piano are not meant to be the acoustic-harmonic support for the strings, but it is the string quartet that appears as the acoustic extension of the piano. Other times the single instruments of the quartet sound more or less independently of each other and they echo each other. Their asynchrony multiplies the sound-space, like the loose play of peasant musicians.'' (L. Vidovszky) The piece was commissioned by Kunstfest Weimar for the concerts entitled Visions - Hommage a Franz Liszt''. It was premieredon August 27, 2011 in Weimar, performed by the soloists of Klangforum Wien.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extant, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is the second great keyboard master of the Baroque Age next to Couperin. His works are as unknown to pianists, with few exceptions, as they are famous among harpsichord players. The virtuosity and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the harpsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their interpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these Impressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instructions, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's (EB 8029) and Rameau's music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. Baroque dance forms and graceful character pieces (LaJoyeuse, L'Indifferente) are typical ofRameau's work. Simplifications to a small extent of the harpsichord setting and also of the omamentation in the original version were required, based on the teaching experience of the editor. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The Minuet on page 6 has been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series: what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the espective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. Indications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case by used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realisation of trills (according to the table). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1980.

The Butterflies and the Windmills are both especially typical of masterful character pieces. The demands made on technique certainly correspond to a level of moderate difficulty. The Critical Report on the oratorio Elijah concludes the five-volume edition of this major work by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It presents - by way of exception in the form of a volume separate from the music editions - the summary of all the editorial commentaries particularly associated with the early versions (Volume V/11A) and the final version (Volume V/11) of Elijah, which has appeared in print. With the piano reduction (Volume V/11B) and the volume containing sketches and discarded versions (Volume V/11C), the Critical Report interweaves in other ways: Since it was possible to realize an independent, self-contained commentary for the former one, the present complete report only contains the relevant source overviews and descriptions but no source evaluation and text-critical remarks. The volume of sketches and discarded versions, on the other hand, containing a classification and comments on all the musical documents the composer had not intended for the public - among them, in particular, the documentation of the work's modification for the final version - serves not least as a supplement and practical illustration of the verbal explanations contained in the Critical Report. Thus, the Critical Report, as Volume V/11D of the Edition, is intended to bundle, systematize and provide conclusive commentaries on the documents transmitted in connection with the Elijah, including not only the musical, but also all written documents - libretto drafts, correspondence, sources on the (English) reception -- that are specifically presented in this volume. The Critical Report on Elijah contains the presentation and evaluation of a total of six source collections and nearly 260 individual sources, including no fewer than 20 libretto drafts written by Mendelssohn himself or with his participation. An essential component is also a detailed chronology of the work's genesis. Mendelssohn's creative work on his second oratorio took an unusually long period of twelve years, in fact almost a third of his life.Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2023.

Here you will find the concerto R (A Portrait for Piano and Orchestra).
ISBN 9790004187197. 9 x 12 inches.
A Musical Portrait In 2012 Nicola Campogrande received a rather singular commission when a total stranger asked him to compose a musical portrait of his fiancee. The man knew exactly what he wanted: a concerto for piano and orchestra. After some reflection, Campogrande realised that he would be able to paint with music. It would never be possible, of course, to recognise the shape of the woman's face or the colour of her hair, but the score could evoke the way in which she occupied space and time, and the different movements of the composition would be like the faces on a rotating prism. Campogrande thus accepted the commission and the stranger sent him a few photos of his fiancee, spoke to him about her and, finally, introduced him to her. This is how R (A portrait for piano and orchestra) was born, first performed in April 2013 by Lilya Zilberstein with the Orchestra Verdi in Milan. Subsequently, following other performances and a TV documentary, a number of different pianists asked Campogrande to write a version for solo piano. Hence Nudo emerged, a piece that would be very similar to R , were it not for the fact that, as the title suggests, the pianist is naked, without orchestral clothing. 'Nudo' is a scintillating work that paints a vivid and fascinating sequence of musical portraits of its subject. And the Breitkopf score is simply superb. (www.pianodao.com).

The first movement has a dreamy and dramatic impressionistic quality, whereas the second movement is deeply melancholy and religious sounding. The third movement is playful with pulsating rhythms, which demonstrate a symphonic jazz feel. In 1963, at the age of thirty, Lane quickly formed up a close friendship with Paul Van Ness through their involvement with the Ridgewood Orpheus Glee Club (NJ), an all-male choir for which Lane was appointed accompanist. Lane maintained the accompanist position for this group for forty-one years until his death in 2004. Lane dedicated his Sonata 2 to Van Ness as a high school graduation present in 1965. During this period Lane also composed a piano suite for four hands, and a fantasy for piano and orchestra, along with other solo instrumental, choral and orchestral works. Van Ness performed the world premiere of Piano Sonata 2 at his Senior Recital in 1969, five years after its conception, at the Eastman School of Music, Lane’s alma mater. Karl Tricomi, another student of Lane’s and also graduate of the Eastman School of Music performed this second Sonata in 1976 at Carnegie Hall (NY) as well.

Busoni's Bach Advanced SchoolIn October 1909, Breitkopf & Hartel succeeded in winning Ferruccio Busoni for the edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's piano works. Busoni had studied the music of Bach more intensively than almost any other artist of his time had. As a pianist, arranger, theorist and pedagogue, Busoni was instrumental in bringing Bach out of the 19th century and into the 20th century. That same year, Busoni and two collaborators, Bruno Mugellini and Egon Petri, began work on the instructive edition, which was to comprise 25 volumes. The first volumes were published in the spring of 1916, and in May 1923, the Bach Advanced School project was finally completed. This also marked the end of Busoni's thirty-year-long creative involvement with Bach's works, the impact of which still reaches far beyond the Bach-Busoni formula. All alterations and additions pursue the educational intent of affording the student insight into the mechanism of the composition. Moreover, they illustrate and supplement the views presented only in a sketchy manner in the introductions. In several cases, it takes the sum of the comments on the various pieces to constitute the all-encompassing opinion on one and the same question. (Ferruccio Busoni).

It is quite amazing that the piano works of the English composer Ethel Smyth had remained unpublished until 2003. All of them were written during her Leipzig study years after 1877, a period that Ethel Smyth herself described as the happiest time of her life. In Leipzig, she met such musical giants as Brahms, Clara Schumann, Dvorak, Grieg and Tchaikovsky. It should come as no surprise that these encounters left stylistic traces in Ethel Smyth's piano oeuvre.Smyth wrote the three piano sonatas in 1877, yet they are stylistically diverse: Smyth raced through a kind of musico-historical evolution. Her point of departure was Haydn and Mozart, who clearly inspired her sonata in C major. It was followed by the impassionate sonata in C sharp minor, which was inspired by the actress Marie Geistinger. The two-movement fragment in D major, reflecting Ethel Smyth's admiration for Brahms, concludes the sonatas. Most of the other piano pieces borrow their atmosphere and titles from Baroque models (dance movements, genre pieces) and are technically undemanding. They have been arranged in this edition in order of progressive difficulty. It is quite amazing that the piano works of the English composer Ethel Smyth had remained unpublished to this day. She wrote all of these pieces during her years of study in Leipzig, after 1877.

For several years, Tio, The Little Keyboard Man , has been looking over the shoulders of younger and older piano beginners as hero and helper. Used to complement schoolwork, the little Tio pieces help to recreate and deepen what has been learned in other contexts. Whether now as a single player or paired as a duet, whether relaxed at Christmas or bold in an expanded tonal space - Tio is always on the spot and has packed the appropriate music. After five volumes, a sixth and final volume will complete the piano series. A Goodbye Song For the sixth and closing volume of her Tio series, the piano pedagogue and artist Kerstin Strecke has compiled a selection of German and European children's songs. Presented primarily as supplementary literature from the first piano lesson, the volume even includes several pieces in two levels of difficulty and for four-hand playing. Song texts are given in German or in their original language and freely translated into German. A table of contents of the songs, in English, can be found at the end of the volume, lovingly illustrated by the author herself. Small, interspersed additional assignments also support a first understanding of music theory in the young keyboard artists.

The piano, the concert grand piano as a percussion instrument, as a string instrument, as a plucked instrument? Why not? - here are resonant surfaces and there are strings. In fact, it seems obvious to pluck the strings, to produce harmonics, to play in the interior space with mallets, to use bow hairs, e-bow and bottleneck. But how do I find my way in this style of playing beyond the keys? Is that even allowed? What if I break something in the process? And where is this or that spot, and what do you call it? What works convincingly, and where are the difficulties? Klaus Steffes-Hollander answers these and other questions in this book.

This first print is a rarity: the highly virtuoso, evocative 'Nocturne' owes its creation to an instrument that has only survived as a museum piece. Gustave Lyon, the director of the French instrument maker Pleyel, commissioned Charles Koechlin as well as several other French composers (such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel) to write works for the 'harpe chromatique' developed by him around 1900. In contrast to the common pedal harp, the chromatic harp allows for an unlimited modulatory range. Nevertheless, the instrument did not gain much acceptance and remained exotic. Koechlin was aware of the difficulty of introducing and establishing new instruments. He therefore, from the very beginning, had the piano as an alternative of equal value in mind when writing his Nocturne.

Anthology Album of Urtext Caliber Johannes Brahms could count more prominent musical personalities among his friends than most 19th-century composers. The present anthology album offers a representative selection of piano music by these Brahms friends, foregrounding the second half of the 19th century. Chosen here have been small-scaled works of medium difficulty, which are equally suitable for performance and teaching purposes. The text section outlines, among other things, Brahms's complex rapport with his friends, while the critical report provides information about the sources used and the editorial decisions.

The pieces contained in this volume prepare the student for the playing in three and four parts that is required for the perfomance of the three-part inventions and the French suites. They are most appropriately incorporated into the teaching material after the two-part inventions have been studied. New technical problems, such as the passing under and over of fingers without using the thumb and the rapid substitution of fingers on one key, must here be solved. In order to make the fonn clear, the notation has been simplified as much as possible; the indications of fingering remain quite complicated enough, even though they cannot by far show all the possibilities. lt is necessary to adapt the fingerings to the mobility and span of the particular player's hands, whilst retaining the chosen phrasings to the best of his ability. Isolated notes which require a span exceeding the octave have been placed in brackets; the performance of the ornaments is shown in footnotes. As in the first volume, the missing dynamic and tempo indications must be supplied by the performer himself in accordance with the character of each piece. Especial attention must be paid in polyphonic music to the problem of phrasing and articulation. The editor's suggestions can be replaced by other solutions that make musical sense; these should then be written into the parts. An intensive preoccupation with polyphone structures can even at an early age increase the understanding and love of the musical work of art. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Summer 1977.
