This piece is concerned with the world of shaman, which I have been very interested in lately. A shaman is a person who creates a path connecting this world and the underworld. In this trio, the violin represents female, and the cello male. The instruments sing a duo as an extension of the voices of two shamans. The piano is the cosmos and the nature. Violin and piano have a 'Yin and Yang' relationship, the creation principal of the Taoism cosmos: polar opposites which compliment one another without cancelling each other out, creating perfect harmony. The title of the piece refers to the Agama, a fundamental holy scripture of early Buddhism. The young composer says about it: 'The basic ideas of these writings were a source of my inspiration. The compositional material corresponds to my own musical language and is strongly linked to the spirit and concept of these Buddhist writings.'The result is a very lively and spirited interplay of the musical passages among the different instruments. The piece is a harmonious blend of Chinese contemporary music and distinct reminiscences of tradition.

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass. In 2014 we published all four versions of Adagio in a new edition.Adagio for violin and piano: Z. 14911 Adagio for viola and piano: Z. 14894 Adagio for violoncello and piano: Z. 14895 Adagio for double bass and piano: Z. 14896 (The former catalogue number was Z. 768.)Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) komponierte sein Adagio für Violine und Klavier im Jahre 1905 und widmete es dem hervorragenden Geigenvirtuosen Imre Waldbauer.

The publishers Henle and Breitkopf & Hartel are continuing their collaboration, now with Brahms, by publishing the performance material of the double concerto. Brahms's last work with orchestra was published in the new Brahms Complete Edition in 2002, whereby the editor was able to base himself on newly accessible sources. Of particular interest are the additional performance instructions for the solo violin and solo cello, which were gathered from the first edition of the solo parts. These indications were supplied by the soloists of the first performance, Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann. No doubt authorized by Brahms, they communicate valuable insights into the performance practice of the time. The new material also contains a part in which the solo violin and cello are notated one above the other. The trio edition for violin, violoncello and piano (EB 6040), which was made by Brahms himself, has proven itself for chamber performances; it continues to be available. The full score is a conductor's dream: big, bold, and beautifully laid out on glare-free bluff paper. “More than 20 years ago I was called upon by friends, artists, and aficionados to write about fingerings for the violoncello,†then-famous Berlin cellist Jean-Louis Duport thus opens his “Essai†from 1806, dedicated to “Professeurs de Violoncelle.†His methodology revolutionized cello technique, and the 21 etudes printed in its appendix are still regarded today as perhaps the most important set of studies for all budding cellists. Modelled after the volumes of etudes for violin, Henle is also issuing the Urtext here, together with all original fingerings and bowings, while also offering alternatives by the famous cellist and teacher Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. This edition also offers a second cello part provided by Duport for accompaniment.

The two manuscripts in oblong size (by the same hand) entitled Sinfonia a Violoncello Solo which served as the basis for the present edition are being kept in the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna under shelf mark E.M.29. Apart from the continuo realization and modifications in the sense of present-day notation carried out tacitly all other changes are listed in the footnotes, editorial additions have been put in square brackets. The bass part was supported in contemporary practice by a melody instrument. If performing with piano accompaniment, the supporting of the bass is not necessary. In case of harpsichord accompaniment, however, it is recommended to play the bass on bassoon instead of violoncello. Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.

Robert Schumann's Violoncello Concerto op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument's repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset.Schumann wrote the score in 1850, during his Dusseldorf years, but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication, more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann's Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on the original print of the parts and the piano reduction, which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition, the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for violoncello and piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments, Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.A key work of the romantic concerto repertoireThe piano reduction by Robert Schumann contains the unsigned solo part as well as the solo part arranged and annotated by Heinrich Schiff.

The ensemble work “Scattered Shades,†composed in 2014, of the Chinese composer Guoping Jia for the instrumentation flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano was premiered on 21 May 2014 in Beijing at the 'Beijing Modern Music Festival,' performed by the ensemble 'Les Temps Modernes.' Although this work received its essential inspiration from ancient Chinese pen-and-ink painting, it also simultaneously documents the overcoming of a creative crisis. During an artistically difficult period, Jia assigned himself the task in 1997 to compose a study that was to supersede the compositional techniques used so far with the means of rational construction. “Scattered Shades†has recourse to this study, retracing its structure in a more profound way with a different ensemble.

This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the 'junior' companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto's large-dimensional introductory section with the indication 'Feierlich, schreitend' [solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one's way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward. As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic - i.e. vertical - progressions.- Jorg Widmann.
