The scoring is flexible and structured in modules: there is a cantus firmus which can be sung by a choir, or by the congregation in unison in treble or bass range. * It is perfectly possible to achieve an expressive performance of this unison version with just organ accompaniment. * The Missa secunda can be expanded to a four-part setting. * A five-part performance can be achieved by the addition of an upper voice (children's choir or solo soprano). * In the full scoring the Missa secunda can be accompanied in ceremonial style by a wind quintet and timpani. In 2014, Chanticleer commissioned me to make a new arrangement of the Hungarian-Romani folk song Jarba, Mare Jarba for their 2014 touring program. Passed down orally through the Romani communities, this beautiful folk song, with text in a language called Beas (beh-osh), speaks of a deep longing to visit one's homeland, a place where the singer can never return. Chanticleer consists of twelve men whose vocal ranges span from low bass to high soprano, equivalent to the range of a mixed choir of women and men. I composed slow sections of original material to represent the singers' longing to return home; these are interspersed with the folk song's traditional fast sections. The incorporated shouts and calls in the score are typically found in the performance of Central European folk songs. I hope you enjoy singing this new version of Jarba, Mare Jarba that contains all of the vigor and excitement of the Chanticleer version. PERFORMANCE NOTES All spoken sounds (indicated by x noteheads) should be performed by individuals. Feel free to elaborate with more sounds of your own in the tradition of Eastern European folk music. If the piece is memorized, feel free to experiment with clapping on the off-beats of m. 93 to the end. This festive arrangement was used at both the US papal visits of Pope Benedict XVI (2008) and Pope Francis (2015), and can be a thrilling addition to important occasions such as anniversary or dedication events. Following the opening fanfare, verse 1 is scored for unison voices, brass and organ, verse 2 for 4-part choir with solo trumpet, and verse 3 for unaccompanied choir.  After a key change, the final rousing verse employs unison choir, descant, assembly and all instruments. The brass writing is striking and the vocal parts require only a minimum of rehearsal.

The extraordinarily high reputation among Handel's contemporaries of his Passion Oratorio to words by Brockes is indicated by the fact that no less eminent a musician than Johann Sebastian Bach himself made a copy of this work.
