New edition, with preface by Gerard McBurney. The work was composed in 1933-38 for one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky. McBurney explains that, somehow this concerto had come to seem jinxed to the composer. And when, in 1947, he heard it in Moscow once again, this time played by the young Mstislav Rostropovich, he decided to recast it (albeit using much of the same material) as an entirely new piece, the Sinfonia Concertante, op 125. The earlier version never entirely disappeared, however, with a scattering of cellists always preferring it to the later one. And in recent years, it has found new favor and new champions, its spectacularly difficult cello writing and virtuosic orchestral effects offering a brilliance, pungency and fascination all of their own..

Enjoy the fantasy and thrills of the adventures from J. K. Rowling in this delightful setting from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Very simple, elegant, and beautiful, this is also a great piece to work on shifting. The violins use 3rd position while the cellos use both 3rd and 4th positions. There are spots that will work nicely in positions other than those marked for the violas and basses if you want to have all sections work on shifting. Featuring Newt Says Goodbye to Tina and Jacob's Bakery. (3:20) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995, as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors, Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's festival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music, but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence, for example in ornamental figures and in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking, referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems to accelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and the suspension of the harmonies in the final climax, which can make one think of Mahler and Berg, or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot, Sibelius. This is the Score, published by Chester Music; the duration of the pieces is approximately 16 minutes.

The performance material available up till now for Dvorákâ??s sun-filled cheerful Symphony no. 8 has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. The challenge of correcting it has now been taken over by the editor Jonathan Del Mar. He has taken into account the engraverâ??s copy, which was actually discovered in a trash bin at Novelloâ??s in 1964. Its title page bears the words â??Copied from my original manuscriptâ? in Dvorákâ??s hand. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyistâ??s pen. This new edition with score and orchestral parts in an enlarged format is accompanied by a detailed Critical Commentary on the sources and alternative readings. It also contains important facsimile pages to clarify problematical readings.

Written to help students understand the concept of positions, this entire piece can be played by the violins, violas, and cellos in 3rd position with no shifting! Playing in positions is often a challenging hurdle for many young musicians yet an important prerequisite for advanced techniques. The rhythms are kept very simple so students can focus on playing in a new way. With a dark, mature sound and named after an ancient Roman border river, this piece allows plenty of room for expression. To cross the Rubicon is to pass a point of no return and enter into a new realm. This work is both a valuable teaching tool for a new musical adventure and a thrilling concert piece that students will be excited to show off in concert. (1:45).

Classical ReminiscencesDuring his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (leaving out the violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart's wind serenades. The expressive Adagio is the heart of the five-movement work. Quite untypical of Brahms, he acquired a liking for the work from the outset, still undertaking a revision scarcely 15 years after the premiere of 1860; this has now been made available in a new practical edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (JBG).

Strauss had originally intended that Don Quixotealways be performed, if possible, together with Heldenleben, since Don Q. in particular is only fully comprehensible alongside Heldenleben. To date, Strauss's wish is rarely respected. The Don Quixote Urtext edition now being published by Breitkopf & Hartel can assist here. Once again, the new edition is based on Strauss's own engraver's model, helping to clarify numerous misunderstandings, and facilitating the correction of dozens of traditional errors. Furthermore, the woodwind parts, previously available only in manuscript form, are now appearing completely engraved for the first time. This new edition is also being augmented by a piano reduction of the most important orchestral passages for facilitating the study of the solo cello and viola parts; these two solo parts are also separately included with the purchase of the piano reduction.First Urtext edition since the original edition; Evaluation of all available manuscript and printed sources; Detailed preface giving the genesis and reception history; Detailed critical report; Facsimile pages.

My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilege (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. The two-movement form of the Concerto for Orchestra derives from a symphonic sonata structure, reshaping the traditional four-movement form and combining this with aspects of sonata form, a tradition that goes back to Liszt, Schoenberg and Sibelius:1st movement (i) exposition of ideas - dramatic and sudden (ii) scherzo and development 1 - resolute2nd movement (iii) adagio - calm and unhurried (iv) development 2 with recapitulation - intense and energeticThe Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim with the support of Die Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg for its first two performances on 31st March and 1st April 2008 conducted by Friedemann Layer. Scored for baritone solo, small 'narrator' chorus, large chorus and orchestra, MacMillan's first Passion setting was composed in 2007. Lasting 87 minutes the work is divided into two parts, with 10 movements overall. As Paul Spicer has commented, “The originality of the St John Passion lies in MacMillan's ability to mix old with new, rather in the manner of Bach in his day. There are passages of sumptuous polyphony and there is a fresh look at the text where passages of Latin are interspersed with the Gospel story in English. In movement seven ('Jesus and his Mother'), MacMillan introduces not only part of the Stabat Mater but also his own words ('Lully, lulla, my dear darling'). The final movement, which is purely orchestral, is a kind of via doloroso march with a Scots lament over quite brass chords. The string writing here, with its elegiac cello lines, is deeply reminiscent of the early 20th-century English school. This should be the War Requiem of the 21st century.&rdquo.
