“Tico-Tico†is a well-known Brazilian piece composed by Zequinha de Abreu. Georges Sadeler arranged this work for Saxophone and Clarinet Quartet. Georges Sadeler, born in 1988 is a Luxembourgish composer and saxophonist with the Grand Ducal Military Band of Luxembourg. His father kindled his interest in composing and arranging at an early age, a study he later continued under his two teachers Marco Pütz and Claude Lenners, both of whom taught at the Conservatoire of Music, Luxembourg. He gradually began to establish his own style, combining the enormous range of possibilities of contemporary music and classical music and, in the years that followed, he won six first prizes at various national and international composition competitions. His works have since been performed all over Europe.

Etude IV. from 12 Etudes in All the Minor Keys. Arranged for saxophone quartet by Matt Evans.
Matt Evans is a saxophonist in the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” He is a founding member of the Zzyzx Quartet, Project Fusion and the Eastman Saxophone Project (ESP), and is a laureate of the Fischoff, Plowman, Coleman, J.C. Arriaga, and MTNA competitions.
One of the most pleasant surprises I’ve had in my composing life was my accidental discovery of the Zzyzx Quartet’s arrangement of this etude. If asked, I would have never thought that my piece could be adapted to the medium of the sax quartet! But Matt Evans’ ingenuity as an arranger, coupled with a genuinely masterful performance which managed to capture the true spirit of the work, convinced me completely. I am so happy to have a small part in contributing to the sax quartet literature! - Marc-Andre Hamelin

Three works with quotations from well-known composers are contained in this tongue-in-cheek collection. Otto M. Schwarz has produced an outstanding recording of these works with members of the Slovak Philharmonic, which is available on all streaming and download platforms. 1. THE AMADEUS WATCH: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's own watch - if he had one - ticks away. The ticking carries us back in time with a piece that stylistically imitates the music of the 18th century in melody, harmony and rhythm. 2. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers' dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally. Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR WOOD QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continuous eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts, and following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.

This piece could be best described as a classically constructed piece with a jazz attitude. The tonal language has more to do with 20th century chamber music than jazz, as do the form and the structure of the movements. The rhythmic language probably comes more from jazz than from the classical area, although at times the piece could go either way. The same could be said for the phrasing and articulation.

There is more light in this room when you are here is a fervently optimistic mood piece embodying the core themes of my song cycle The Lustful Mother. The title refers to another person - maybe a lover, child or friend - whose existence makes life more meaningful. In the first movement, the music wanders through the twilight, and the solitary recitation of the tenor sax is framed by answering sighs from the soprano and alto. In the second movement, the full quartet joins in the same hopeful song, that, endlessly swaying and discreetly circling, fills the whole space with its light. The work was commissioned by the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, to which it is dedicated.

John Carisi was a complete original both as a composer and as a person. His scruffy, unassuming demeanor, which concealed the sharpest of minds, combined with the wrinkled trench coat he often wore reminded those who knew him of the seemingly absent minded detective played by Peter Falk in the eponymous TV series. I would occasionally run into him on a midtown street corner where a casual hello would often turn into an hour-long discussion of music.Saxophone Quartet SATB Duration: 9:20 Composed: 2013 Published by: Distributed Composer.
