Home on the Range is gebaseerd op een gedicht (‘My Western Home’ uit 1872) van Brewster Higley, een arts uit Indiana die een jaar daarvoor een stukje land had gekocht in Kansas. Vervolgens schreef Dean Kelley er een melodie bij -het nieuwe lied werd al snel geliefd onder migranten in de Verenigde Staten. In de loop der jaren werd het steeds bekender, het is uitgevoerd door vele artiesten, onder wie Frank Sinatra. In 1947 werd Home on the Range hetofficiële lied van de staat Kansas. Brewster Higleys omschrijving van een helderblauwe hemel, oneindige vergezichten en een overvloedige fauna vindt met deze muziek nog altijd weerklank bij luisteraars.

Bryan Kidd schuf eine sehr kreative, voll klingende Bearbeitung des Klassikers mit ausgefallenen Harmonien. So haben Sie dieses Lied noch nie gehört! Home on the Range est une ancienne mélodie country qui plonge ses racines dans l’Amérique de l’Ouest. Cette mélodie a récemment fait le tour de monde, après avoir été intégrée dans la bande originale du film d’animation La ferme se rebelle produit par les studios Disney. Bryan Kidd en a réalisé une version très créative avec des harmonies surprenantes et des lignes expressives. Une composition fun et divertissante.

‘Panem et Circenses’, Bread and Games were essential for keeping the citizens of ancient Rome in check.
While the bread was meant for the poorest among the Romans, the Games were Popular Pastime Number One for everybody.
There were different kinds of games, such as chariot races (especially popular with female spectators), or wild-beast fights, where lions, tigers, bulls or bears were set on one another or even on human beings. Most popular, however, were the Gladiator fights.

In ‘Bread and Games’ William Vean depicts one of the many fights in the antique Colosseum.
1. Entrance of the Gladiators: By powerful bugle-calls the attention of the peoplewas asked for, after which the Gladiators entered the Arena at the sound of heroic marching-music.
2.Swordfight: We can hear that the fights were not mere child’s play in this part.On the contrary, they were a matter of life and death and were fought accordingly.
3.Mercy of the Emperor: Sometimes a wounded gladiator could be fortunate, depending on the mercy of the audience. Waving one’s handkerchief meant mercy, a turned-down thumb meant no pardon. The Emperor had the right to take the final decision, but he usually complied with the wish of the majority of the public.
4.Lap of Honour: Gladiators were mainly selected among slaves, convicted criminals, or prisoners of war. Consequently, winning was very important, as it would mean fame, honour and sometimes even wealth. A lap of honour, therefore, was the winner’s due reward.

‘Panem et Circenses’, brood en (circus)spelen, essentieel in het Romeinse leven om de burgers in het gareel te houden.
Het brood was vooral voor de allerarmsten bedoeld, maar de spelen, dat was volksvermaak nummer één.
Erwaren verschillende soorten spelen, de Strijdwagen racen, vooral in trek bij de vrouwen, de dierengevechten of jachtpartijen, waar leeuwen, tijgers, buffels of beren tegen elkaar of tegen mensen opgehitst werden. Maar favoriet warentoch wel de gevechten der Gladiatoren.

William Vean beschrijft in ‘Bread and Games’ één van de vele gevechten in het aloude Colosseum.
1. Entrance of the Gladiators: Met krachtige (hoorn)signalen wordt de aandachtvan het volk gevraagd waarna de Gladiatoren op heldhaftige marsmuziek de Arena binnentreden.
2. Swordfight: Dat de gevechten geen kinderspel waren horen we in dit deel. Het gaat er hard aan toe, en de gevechten waren vaak op levenen dood.
3. Mercy of the Emperor: In enkele gevallen had een gewonde Gladiator geluk. Dit hing af van de stemming van het publiek. Wapperende zakdoeken betekende geluk, met de duim naar beneden wijzen betekende geen pardon.De Keizer had het laatste woord maar volgde meestal de stemming van het publiek.
4. Lap of Honour: Gladiatoren werden meestal uit slaven, veroordeelde misdadigers of krijgsgevangen geselecteerd. Winnen was daarom erg belangrijk.Dit betekende roem, eer en soms zelfs rijkdom. (vergelijkbaar met onze sporthelden) Een ereronde was dus wel op zijn plaats.

,,Trau er nur dem holzernen Freund nicht. Er ist manchmal ein lederner (aus den Beethoven-Konversationsheften) Dieses Schlagzeugtrio, das in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Widmungstragern entstanden ist, besteht aus drei Teilen. Es wird durch die schiere Freude am dramaturgisch gebundelten Konstruieren entlang seismischer Bruchlinien gepragt. Die drei Percussion-Spieler wechseln wahrend des Werkes zwischen drei Setups an verschiedenen Spielpositionen - vom Buhnenhintergrund, uber die Mitte der Buhne bis vorne an der Buhnenrampe. Dabei wird jeweils ein anderes Klangmaterial, im ersten Teil (Part I) das Fell, im zweiten Teil (Part II) das Metall und im dritten Teil (Part III) das Holz in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. Part I (5'30'') ist mit drei O-Daikos besetzt, die mit Fingern, Handen, Fausten, Superballs und Holzstaben gespielt werden. Part II (6'00'') ist um drei Glockenspiele, drei Vibraphone und drei Sixxen gruppiert und integriert auch Metallinstrumente wie Chinese Opera Gongs, Mini-Tam-Tams und Metalltonnen, die mit Fussmaschine gespielt werden. In Part III (4'00'') spielen alle drei Musiker mit Rundstaben, Handen und Rohrenglockenhammern das mit sieben massiven Balken aus Eschenholz besetzte baskische Nationalinstrument Txalaparta, das auch seine ganz eigene Geschichte im Widerstand gegen die Franco-Diktatur hat. Reizvoll war fur mich sowohl, dass man zu dritt auf diesem archaischen Instrument wirklich aberwitzig schnelle Rhythmen spielen kann, als auch, dass dieses Instrument auf Konzertpodien klanglich wie optisch noch vollig neu ist - und dies, trotz aller Schlichtheit, bei einem unglaublichen Reichtum an Klangmoglichkeiten. Kleine rhythmische Zellen, die sich immer wieder zu vielfaltigen neuen Texturen - bis zur klanglichen Entfesselung - zusammenballen und eine feine Differenzierung und Dynamisierung der Anschlagsmoglichkeiten bestimmen dieses Werk. Auch, wenn nur Part II durch den Einsatz bestimmter Tonhohen gepragt ist (durch die Verwendung der von Yannis Xenakis erfundenen Sixxen durchaus mikrotonal), so gibt es doch unuberhorbar abschnittsubergreifende Kontinuitaten in Rhythmik und Motivik, die das ganze Werk bestimmen und es dabei wie feine seismische Adern durchziehen. Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart.
After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’.
Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it.
The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788).
Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody.

In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke.

Misschien wel het meest bekende Schotse lied, maar tegelijkertijd ook het minst bekende, er zijn er maar weinig mensen die de tekst mee kunnen zingen.
Na het bekende ‘Should auld acquaintaintance be forgot and .....‘ vervallenvelen in ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’.
Zelfs in Schotland is maar een enkeling in staat de tekst correct weer te geven.
De huidige versie wordt toegeschreven aan de Schotse dichterRobert Burns. Burns heeft echter niet de hele tekst gemaakt.
Toen hij de eeuwen oude Schotse ballade door een oude man hoorde zingen, heeft hij enkele verzen toegevoegd (1788).
Historisch onderzoek leert dat de ballade voorveel doeleinden gebruikt werd, voor politieke als ook religieuze doelen.
Tegenwoordig wordt ‘Auld Lang Syne’ gebruikt als Christmas Carol en wordt het gezongen tijdens de jaarwisseling op oudejaarsavond.Het lied, soms meteen andere tekst, wordt echter op veel meer plaatsen gebruikt.
Liefde, Vriendschap en Afscheid zijn dan meestal de sentimenten die gecombineerd worden met de meeslepende melodie.

In dit arrangement staat een ‘laag’ solo-instrumentcentraal.
De harmonisatie in de begeleiding sluit naadloos aan bij deze gevoelens die dit lied oproepen.
