Legendary composer W. Francis McBeth once said, If Claude Smith only wrote the fanfare to Eternal Father, he would still be a legend. Smith takes the Navy’s hymn as the basis for his fanfare. This famous hymn tune, normally in the major key, has now been placed in the minor key then transitions to Allegro Vivace. The hymn tune is put through its paces including several variations and two fugatos (one for the woodwinds and one for brass). A short transition,(including the famous 7/8 measure!) to the now well-known setting for French horn quartet, gives us an emotional rendition of the original hymn tune now in the major key. The full band plays the hymn, and a timpani roll takes us back to the original fanfare now in C major. A classic of literature and a composition which will provide a meaningful experience for musician and audience member alike.

Béla Bartók composed his Piano Quintet while at grammar school in Pozsony (Pressburg, now Bratislava), and it still shows the influence of Brahms in its melody and harmony. The work was always resoundingly successful at his youthful concerts. When on 7 January 1921 the Waldbauer Quartet wanted to repeat the programme of a concert given ten years previously, Bartók was displeased that this early work of his should be performed once again. Finally he consented to the performance, and played the piano part himself. The quintet was greeted with tumults of applause, unlike the other pieces on the programme, which were written later. According to a communication by Márta Ziegler,Bartók threw away the score in anger, and for many years it was believed to have been destroyed. In 1963, the editor Denijs Dille received a package inside which were the score and parts, which had been thought lost. Denijs Dille wrote: 'In preparing the text of this edition for practical purposes, I used the autograph score, and Bartók's own handwritten parts for the first and second violins, viola, and cello. [...] Bartók made so many deletions and significant changes in the score that the resulting version was somewhat different from the original. In this edition we give the last version, supplemented with the minor changes and signs that can be found in the string parts.'.

The overall tone is pacifistic and anti-bourgeois. Busoni's inspiration was that of an opera-play in the style of Italian improvised comedy; he wanted types and characters on stage whose varying typology would provide the source of conflict ... The title hero absconds with the young wife of the Dante-reading tailor Matteo. He returns as a false barbarian commander, as a husband who engages in a duel with the suitor Count Leandro, and as a conqueror who announces the moral of the story in the epilogue: how to be able to bow in rags and still retain one's dignity and rights. The piece takes a turn for the absurd when the Abbate, at the sight of Leandro, who is presumed dead, begins to sing a chorale-like song of praise to the donkey of Providence who comes trotting in at that moment. This introduces the most musically refined number in the piece, the quartet, in which Leandro's love aria and his duet with Columbina satirize the attitudes prevalent in Italian opera from Scarlatti to Verdi. Musically, Busoni uses throughout the entire work an idiom of dance-like, blissfully transparent comedy and hides harmonic audacities behind touches of lightness. Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.

This emotional and reflective work paints a stunning picture of the holiday season as seen through the eyes of a homeless person on a street corner. The music relies heavily on a juxtaposition of the Ukrainian Bell Carol and Greensleeves, painting a picture of a lonely person who is eventually joined by others. Ultimately, a quartet performs in dramatic fashion before switching to a final duet, leaving the homeless person with a granted wish - company. A stunning and unique work that brings incredible awareness to the holidays and the true spirit of giving.

About FJH Young Band

Appropriate for middle school and smaller high school groups. Second clarinets usually stay below the break. Parts are written with more independence, and instrumentation increases slightly. There is still adequate doubling in the lower voices. Grades 2 - 2.5
