The two manuscripts in oblong size (by the same hand) entitled Sinfonia a Violoncello Solo which served as the basis for the present edition are being kept in the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna under shelf mark E.M.29. Apart from the continuo realization and modifications in the sense of present-day notation carried out tacitly all other changes are listed in the footnotes, editorial additions have been put in square brackets. The bass part was supported in contemporary practice by a melody instrument. If performing with piano accompaniment, the supporting of the bass is not necessary. In case of harpsichord accompaniment, however, it is recommended to play the bass on bassoon instead of violoncello. Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.

The film noir genre of 1940s cinema typically includes a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who coerces the male into committing murder or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting plot line that involves one or more homicides. These movies typically are shot in black and white, with emphasis on shadows and light, alcohol and cigarettes, trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Inspired by this genre, NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting an aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette.
In the mid-1940s, film critics in France noticed a trend emerging in movies from the United States, which they coined film noir (which translates to “black film”). These movies were dark, moody, and pessimistic, reflecting the agitation and anxiety present in society following World War II. Several characteristics are commonly found in many of these movies, including a strong but flawed male lead (often a detective), a beautiful woman who either coerces the male lead into committing murder for her or is a killer herself (a “femme fatale”), and a twisting, turning plot line that involves one or more homicides. Additionally, there are several visual elements that these movies share: many are shot in black and white, with great emphasis on the use of shadows and light; alcohol and cigarettes are heavily consumed by men and women alike; and men typically wear trench coats and fedoras. Most of the story lines do not have happy endings. Examples of film noir include Orson Welles’ The Lady from Shanghai, Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity, and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon.NOIR VIGNETTES consists of four movements, each depicting a different aspect of film noir: Murder at Midnight, Loaded Gun, Femme Fatale, and Last Cigarette.This piece was commissioned by the University of Illinois Research Board on behalf of double bassist Michael Cameron; and it also published for Double Bass and Piano (114-41811). Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass. In 2014 we published all four versions of Adagio in a new edition.Adagio for violin and piano: Z. 14911 Adagio for viola and piano: Z. 14894 Adagio for violoncello and piano: Z. 14895 Adagio for double bass and piano: Z. 14896 (The former catalogue number was Z. 768.)

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) komponierte sein Adagio für Violine und Klavier im Jahre 1905 und widmete es dem hervorragenden Geigenvirtuosen Imre Waldbauer. 1910 schuf Kodály Fassungen für Viola sowie Violoncello: für Kontrabass wurde das Werk von Norbert Duka bearbeitet. 2014 wurden alle vier Fassungen des Adagios in einer neuen Edition in Einzelausgaben veröffentlicht.

The source of this publication was issued in London in 1745 by John Walsh Jr. Walsh s publication contains six four-movement works, originally written for violin, solo cello, a keyboard instrument and a second cello to reinforce the bass of the latter, but the role of the violin is insignificant, so these works can be regarded as pieces for cello. Of the six works, the arranger of the volume was publishing the three most suitable ones to that as cello concertos the piano part incorporates both the violin interludes and the continuo. In the cello part higher positions do occur, but they do not necessarily require use of the thumb they are playable after 4-5 years intensivestudy of the instrument.

Die 1745 in London veröffentlichten Stücke waren ursprünglich für Geige, Solo-Cello, ein Tasteninstrument und ein zweites Cello geschrieben. Die Rolle der Geige war jedoch so unwesentlich, dass es sich im Grunde um Cellowerke handelt. Von den ursprünglich sechs Werken hat der Arrangeur die drei geeignetsten ausgewählt, wobei die Klavierstimme die Geigen- und die Continuostimme in sich vereint. Reynaldo Hahn: Works for cello and piano [AL 30 749] For quite some time, posterity remembered Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) for just a handful of songs and the operetta Ciboulette, overlooking the incredible diversity of a catalogue as eclectic as it is appealing. Yet his chamber music contains many little-known treasures: thus, cellist Steven Isserlis, in his preface, hastens to hail the first modern edition of these two scores, which he regularly plays in recital, so much does their beauty enchant the audience. Published in 1911, the Two Improvisations on Irish Airs for cello and piano turn out to be the transcription of his first and third Preludes for piano four hands (1894). These folk themes come from the collection Songs of Old Ireland, published 12 years earlier by Charles Villiers Stanford: gracefully and tenderly, The Little Red Lark unfurls a melancholic tune of which the regular foundation respects the breadth of phrase typical of folk songs; in The Willow-Tree, the lover begs his beloved in vain to take him in her arms one last time before he lies down, lifeless, in the shade of the tree. Beyond this sensitive exploration of the Irish soul, Hahn offers us a journey into the past: the Variations chantantes sur un air ancien develop a theme borrowed from Cavalli?s opera Xerse. In this aria (1660 version: Act IV, sc. 6), Ambassador Periarco dreams of moving away from court intrigues to be able to taste the pleasures ?to which the gods have destined him?. Reynaldo Hahn?s variations succeed in maintaining the sweet simplicity of this theme, as noble as it is refined. Let us wager that this publication will delight cellists and pianists alike: it contains some nuggets.
