Johann Ernst Eberlin composed over 40 masses. From Salzburg they were widely disseminated in southern Germany, Austria, and Bohemia. Eberlin's Mass in B flat was skillfully arranged for every day use at the monastery in Seitensteeen; thus this a work which, due to its brevity and musical qualities, is ideally suited for the celebration of the Mass. A beautifully sounding continuo mass in a free, concertante style, marked by the joy of baroque music making. Score available separately - see item CA.9126600.

Commissioned by the New York Virtuoso Singers and its conductor Harold Rosenbaum for the Singers' 25th Anniversary. “Why Was Cupid a Boy?” is a short William Blake poem untied to one of the larger works, though it reprises a common theme in Blake: the bewilderment of Man faced with Love contrasted with Woman's relative comfort in it.

In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. Score available separately - see item CA.4003800.

Some forty settings of the four Marian antiphons by Johann Michael Haydn are extant, among them 17 settings of the Salve Regina. The Salve Regina in B flat MH 90, here published for the first time, dates from about 1765, and it survives in a contemporary manuscript copy at Gottweig in Lower Austria. This early composition by Haydn already bears witness to this talent for setting a liturgical text to music. The dialogue between the bass soloist and the choir gives this work a radiance of its own. Score available separately - see item CA.5409000.

The Benedictus and Agnus Dei in B flat is published as part of an ongoing policy to reissue works by Charles Villiers Stanford in the Autograph Edition, in new engravings but as the composer wrote and approved them, with no editing from another hand. Simple in texture but highly effective in performance, these two short movements are a useful addition to the repertoire of music available for a traditional celebration of Holy Communion, and would suit a small church choir with two or three voices per part.
