Text from the well-known Christmas song is merged with a tune from Barry's own 4th String Quartet in this unconventional carol. With Barry's characteristic rich and unexpected harmonies, O Tannenbaum would be a fantastic contemporary addition to a Christmas programme.

Gerald Barry's The coming of winter is a setting of an Irish poem dating from the 9th or 10th century, and was commissioned for the 34th Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music at University College, Cork, in May 1997. The setting is notable for its idiosyncratic use of text: not only are the words of the poem sung both forwards and backwards, but the second half of the piece is given over to percussive nonsense syllables, making this a quirky but highly invigorating image of 'the coming of winter'.

The opening lines of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time provides the text for Gerald Barry's Long Time. Beginning 'For a long time I used to go to bed early', the work unfolds over gently rising and falling C major scales, voice parts handing over to each other in the strict rhythmic regularity that prevails throughout the piece. SATB, English.

This is another fine addition to the repertoire for the foot washing on Holy Thursday. The SATB scoring for the refrain is homophonic, the piano providing subtle rhythmic interest for additional movement. The first two verses are scored for cantor or unison choir, the third and fourth verses maintain the homophonic texture of the refrain. Easy to learn refrain for congregation, with four verses. SATB choir, cantor, assembly and keyboard.
