During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

Israeli pianist Tal Weissman was born in Haifa in 1972, and began his musical training at age four. While a youth, he performed as a soloist with most of the orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded an Outstanding Israeli Competitor at the Arthur Rubenstein Competition in 1992, and has won prizes in international piano competitions in Europe.In 1995, Weissman was accepted for piano studies with the internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Maria Curcio Diamand in London. During this period of study in London, he was awarded many prizes and performed in most of the major concert venues in England. In 1999, he made a concert tour of the United States.Tal Weissman returned to Israel in 2004, where he teaches piano privately and continues to perform both in Israel and abroad. His compositions for piano and other instruments express the human sprit as it faces the challenges of the world.

Kirchner's oeuvre spans a wide range of musical genres. Apart from numerous compositions for orchestra and for the music theatre the former professional viola player has always had a soft spot for chamber music. Though even in this sphere of absolute and pure art Kirchner's music has strong connections with the more theatrical, the Comedie huMayne which is also reflected in his choice of titles (e.g. Mysterion, Il canto della notte, Lamento d'Orfeo, Exil). The clarinet proves to be the ideal instrument to bring out the somewhat scurrilous humour and character of Pierrot; no doubt, player and audience alike will conjure up suitable images (scenes) from the Commedia del' arte.

Kirmo Lintinen composed his clarinet concerto (2012-13) full of rhythmic drive attempting to write for the orchestra as if it were a large chamber ensemble in which listening closely to the other players is both possible and of supreme importance. All four movements of the clarinet concerto are joined together, and their titles say something: prefazione, danze, confessione and finale. Though differing in mood and texture, they all share themes and motifs. The solo cadenza between the third and last movement alludes, as quasi quodlibet suggests, to many motifs, in this case in the past and in the future. Duration c. 23 minutes. Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him.
